NFL Discussion v51: CJNOK for Hire

Byrd will probably turn into a can going to either one of those teams.

People shouldn't be that excited about NFL free agency. A lot of these players don't even pan out with their new team. The draft is the way to build a contender.

Using both is best.

Niners big contributors on defense acquired in FA - Justin Smith, Whitner, Carlos Rodgers, Glenn Dorsey, Ahmad Brooks

Better Raiders than Browns, imo.

Can't see why Revis would want to go there unless he is getting a way better deal.

1. Mike Pettine.

2. Mike Pettine's defensive scheme. The same one Revis played in with the Jets.

3. A better roster. Seriously, would you take the Raiders' roster over the Browns' ?

Inb4 Front office shenanigans.

Agreed. But the players you mentioned weren't the flashy player acquisitions that get all the news and hog all of your cap space. Niners got good solid players for reasonable prices.

I think point #3 is arguable.

You forgot #4 division, which also leans in Clevelands favor.

True, sort of like the Seahawks getting guys like Bennet last year. The niners actually gave Justin a pretty big contract at the time, 6 years 45 million, fanbase was up in arms

If you have the money to play ball you do not pass on top players.

It just shouldnt be how you plan to build your team.

Rarely do top players hit the FA though. It's usually guys that are good but a team doesn't mind letting go because they aren't that big of an impact player. Niners didn't seem to care about letting Goldson or Whitner go to get big money.

Agreed. Its not often that great players hit the open market. This FA is quite loaded though.

This FA is waaayyy loaded.

And sometimes underrated FA come up huge.....Ask the Ravens about Jacoby/Pollard/Daryl Smith.

Unless you're Dan Snyder.

The Browns Arguably have a top 5 receiver and TE. One of the best, if not the best left tackle, an absolutely stacked defense with great depth in the front seven. I could go on and on. The Browns just have the worst QBs in the league.

Quite the turn around for the AFC west.

I would say that the Browns roster is better than the Raiders roster

Anyways, would really like GB to sign someone of note this offseason. 6th most cap room, and Shields' contract only ate up 5.5mil of that

The Raiders have the worst roster in the NFL and it's not really close

The Houston Texans have released Owen Daniels, a source confirmed to ESPN.com, one day after the veteran tight end said he'd be willing to restructure his contract in order to stay with the team.

By releasing Daniels, the Texans save $4.5 million against the cap.

Niiice, Pwn Daniels finna come to GB

Just saw this and thought it sorta fits with your comment:

Rules of free agency

Since free agency opens Tuesday, it's time for some of my rules of free agency, sort of my 10 commandments of the period.

1. Try to bring back your own: You know what you have. You know what they can do. Do your best to get them back -- if you want them on the roster.

2. Don't get sentimental: While it's smart to keep your own, don't keep them if they are coming to the end just because they've been a part of your team. Cutting ties at the right time is an art for a GM.

3. Never sign a running back from another team: Yeah, Seattle got away with it by trading for Marshawn Lynch. But too many times the player has been beaten up and it's not worth it. Don't do it. Sorry, Ben Tate.

4. Don't sign players 30 or older to long-term deals: The value won't be there, no matter what you might think.

5. Look for players ready to take off: Maybe a third receiver or nickel corner ready to be a starter. That's where you get value.

6. Don't overpay based on need: Yes, you want to fill the spot. But spending too much to do so can bite a team in the butt.

7. Don't spend just to spend: That's just fiscal irresponsibility. Cap room should not mean cap stupidity.

8. Be wary of QBs who flash for short periods: They usually aren't your franchise passer, no matter how you might try to evaluate them. So don't get all warm and fuzzy over the Matt Flynns and Matt Cassels of the league. They are what they are.

9. Sign two or three cheap linemen: You want them in camp to compete. The more bodies you have fighting for spots on the line, the better. Offensive linemen sometimes are late bloomers, particularly inside.

10. Wait on bargains: Unless you get a premier offensive lineman, corner or pass rusher, let the market play out. Then jump in and get a bargain later.

Tampa is gonna get Hester and Tillman. And I'm gonna puke.
