I pointed out that JJ Watt is extremely famous for Hurricane Relief efforts and somehow credited with "raising" like 38 mil in funds, but actually gave about 250k himself and was a brilliant marketing genius for taking credit for all the public's donations that would have been raised by relief orgs by having it funneled thru his foundation, while shooting incessant media pieces adorned in nothing but his own personal "JJ" logo advertisements while carrying around $5 cases of water in front of cameras, rather than simply getting people to donate directly to disaster relief and community development orgs that actually commit themselves to this type of thing full time, not just when a sexy hurricane story comes about. And acting as some sort of magic genius football player/relief expert hero that could be "trusted" to manage 38 mil in donations, as if there aren't people who dedicate their entire lives to honing those skills and that he was able to do it casually in a few hours a week.

Some people got upset and accused me of being evil for noting that celebrities use this good will and self-branded attention to then earn tens of millions of endorsements for themselves a year while acting as middlemen for charitable giving with their own foundations as huge tax shelters that get a lot of the attention. More people probably know what the JJ Watt Foundation is now than the charities that actually carry out charitable services.
I studied nonprofit management in school and it triggered a bunch of people, so I asked heavyarms what local charities he cared about and that I'd donate $100 to one to show I wasn't just a grinch. He got very upset, said I was full of shit, and never bothered mentioning any, so I decided to double my gesture if he'd suggest a charity, still got grumpy old man replies calling me a liar, and decided I'd just go with two food banks in Watt's preferred cities that have relatively small amounts of salary overheard/leadership turnover and do direct impact assistance for poor people.

A good charity is something that can provide consistent stable social services to a community year in and year out to cover funding gaps and overlooked societal problems. Generally celebrity-marketing-minded foundations are short-lived intermediaries that coincide with peak popularity and exist as publicity arms for the person's ability to juice up the value of their brands, endorsement deals, contracts etc...
Watt makes more money from endorsements than actually playing football funny enough.
Not saying the guy is evil; it's a pretty standard celebrity hustle and I'm sure his jockular enthusiasm is great and in his mind, the best way to go about things, but it's pretty funny to see how these self-branded foundations are little more than tied to popularity and are great for hosting extravagant galas, meda-laden golf tournies etc... under the umbrella of being "for good".
If you look at the 990-Forms required by the IRS it's pretty stark how Watt's foundation rose up when he got his first big contract to have about a 1 mil a year in net contributions, then suddenly booked 43 mil off middle-manning people's Hurricane Harvey donations in 2018, and by 2021 had faded into obscurity as having just 150,000 a year in net contributions.
The only salaried employee of the foundation is his mom, who takes a modest 50k a year to manage it part time @ 16-hrs a week, but has absolutely zero background in nonprofit management, and the board is a few of his family friends and a business advisor of his who helped him start the org.

I probably should have mentioned I'm very critical of Lebron doing the same shit, since he is disliked a lot more by um....a certain type of person here lol. (e.g. uses his foundation as a proxy for endorsement money, and the board is all his family and his business advisors, not people who are full time relief experts)

JJ Watt's charity is legit.

There are plenty of shady non profits and skepticism for celebrity driven charities makes more sense the more you dig, but the truth is celebrity driven charities appeal to a portion of the population who are not necessarily regular donors.

The good ones pass through that money to more established charities, as JJ Watt's organization appeared to have done.

Save the Children 12.8 million
St. Bernard project of LA 8.5 million
Feeding America 7.5 million

More importantly, there is certainly no guarantee that even well established charities are doing the right thing, as evidenced by the scandals that engulfed the United Way, the Red Cross and too many others.

Justin J. Watt foundation seems legit.
Can we get back to F*cikng football now?

Why in the absolute fuck is Washington going to put Wentz back in….? Theyre going for a playoff spot.

Haven't won since week 12 and Taylor hasn't been great- looking for a shot in the arm. I don't like the move either though, stick with the guy that put you in position to make the playoffs

No one's reading that manifesto you attention whore. Either resume your terrible takes and boring commentary on the NFL or bounce out of here for good.

No this is a gun and fathead thread now; football is over now that Watt retired.
