What would you think about them using a ring like PRIDE and Paancrase did instead of The Octagon? After all, the term "cage fighting" doesn't exactly sound too mainstream. Fights in a ring may appeal to the general public more because of the brutal images associated with cage fighting and the more civilized image of fighting in a ring. It would probably be easier for the fans in attendance to see the fights in a ring as opposed to a cage. Personally I think the ropes would lead to fighters getting tangled up in them too often as well as purposely hooking the ropes to help stop a takedown. That happened to Matt Lindland inside a ring when he was trying to take someone down (forgot name of opponent) according to Joe Rogan.

I doubt it, the Octagon is a much too big of a trademark and MMA is pretty much synonymous with cages now.

No more climbing the cage in exultation ?

Nope, I don't like it. I don't like it one little bit.

The opponent was Fedor. I wouldn't mind a ring, but I think a cage makes more sense and I doubt they will change it.

Doesn't matter anyway. Fedor grabs cages too.

They will have to find alternative methods to push the sport more mainstream because it's a bad idea to start fucking with iconic stuff like the octagon .
It got where it is today for a reason.

The new owners will want to improve on what is already successfull not come in and start fucking with stuff

They should remove Dana White as the spokesperson/president then. No brainer. Your frontman can't resist cursing for more than 20 seconds at a time, has a history of making homophobic and misogynistic comments, and generally pisses on fighters at his earliest convenience when they displease him. It's a wonder he's staying on if this is indeed a primary goal.

Never a ring. MMA is not meant to be fought in the ring. It's more suited for a cage.

One thing I hated in Pride was the center of the ring restarts, which disrupted the flow of the battle. The fact that fighters can stall in the corner of the ring. Also the dangers of falling in-between the ropes or getting tangled for that matter. NO RING FOR MMA!

Close the top and call it "hell in a cell" oh wait...

The ring does not have all the issues people claim it does. Or they're not as bad as people make them out to be. Fights hold the cage just like fighters hold the ropes. Grapplers will have more of an advantage when they're taken down. They wont be as often "stuck in a corner" on the ground as much.

I personally thought the STOP DONT MOVE! restarts of Pride worked well and made the fight more competitive. Give the guy on the bottom more of a chance to work to a defensive position or escape.

But though I have a preference for the ring, the UFC kind of goes hand in hand with the octagon. It's a symbol of the UFC. Even though I personally wouldn't mind a change to a ring I feel like it could hurt the appeal a bit. Everyone knows "the octagon."

thats what i expect - a lot less catered to martial arts enthusiasts and much more toward the casual fan - winning the independent voter

Lol...stall in the corner of the ring...but never up against the cage right? Fighters never hold their opponent down against the cage just for control? Limiting the bottom fighters chance to better their position or escape?

And how many times do you see fighters fall in-between the ropes? Or getting tangled? Not often at all. MMA in a ring has been around longer than in a cage. The cage was a gimmick in the beginning. It's now become a symbol of the UFC but it has just as many pros and cons as a ring.

It really isn't about which environment is better suited for MMA. It's personal preference. Apparently the new owners think a ring would appeal to more?

Cage is better for 5 minute rounds. No people falling out. No restarts to the centre of the ring. And it makes for some unique moves. Such as Aldo's push off the fence superman punch or the infamous Showtime kick!

Rings suck. They are built for boxing. Not grappling.

See...I feel the opposite. How is a cage built for grappling? You get your opponent on top of you up against a cage and that whole side is now off limits for your body to maneuver.

I don't mind the STOP DONT MOVE repositioning in Pride. Get the fight back into the center so we can see some true technique.

Naw the cage is what we know, it's what works. This isn't boxing. There's too much grappling against the cage it is apart of the mainstream sport brand

You're wrong and you just have ring fetish.

Look at all the replies around you. Nobody is agreeing to all those stupid ass reasons as to why a ring is better than a cage for MMA.

Lol you literally cannot get stuck in a corner in the octagon since there are none. The ring, on the other hand, has 4 corners.

Mainstream dont like violence, dont like fighting.

They do like scripted bitching.
Even on sherdog ppl talk about money, marketing scripted bitching less fight talk than 10years ago.

Mainstream: less fighting more clowning and reality bitching talkshows

Sports commisions wouldnt allow mma to be done in a ring ?
