I like the idea of letting guys get out of contract after one year. I mean, the guys are "independent contractors".. if they aren't holding a belt hostage they should be free to go if they want to.

Truth.
The UFC pays them as 1099 contractors, but the truth is that they are more like employees than independent contractors. More like slaves in some cases.
