New to footy, need help

Didn't read the whole thread, but if you're in the US it's silly not to follow the Premier League, NBC has every single game and a ton of coverage.

If you attempt La Liga you will get to see the classico's and highlights.

Choose wisely.....and pull for Tottenham.

If you enjoy activities like crying yourself to sleep at night, pulling out your own hair, or other manifestations of existential dread- then by all means become a Tottenham supporter.

Spuds gonna blow it this year lol. Letting in 5 goals in from the likes of Seattle and Toronto lol

Or a Sunderland supporter. Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.

So, I've watched a couple of WC's and now wanting to get a bit more invested in teams/leagues to make it even more enjoyable. So...

EPL or La Liga? Both?
Whats the deal with the Champions Leauge?
Why are there so many events going on, such as all these friendlies? Feels like it dilutes it a bit when teams don't play their hardest or players sit out.

EPL, you can watch every game on NBC, their other channels on their website (and app) much easier to follow "your' team whoever that ends up being.

BTW if you need help deciding on a team there's this handy guide http://www.nbcsports.com/joe-posnanski/how-pick-premier-league-club
and a quiz; http://www.buzzfeed.com/robinedds/which-english-premier-league-team-should-you-support
or two; http://www.selectsmart.com/premier/
(may all be out of date due to relegation/promotion if you're familiar with the concept)

I recommend watching:
  • Real Madrid.
  • Barcelona.
  • Real madrid vs Barcelona.
  • Barcelona vs Real Madrid.
  • Champions league.
That's what I'm going to do.

We have a premier league "digest show" called "Match of the day" every Saturday. I suggest you watch that a couple of times and pick a team that you are most drawn to.

Smh - this guy has no idea what he's talking about.

Football is not boring at all, yes there may be one or two games where nothing happens but 99% of the games are enjoyable.

I have no idea what I'm "talking about" yet I've played soccer -or football as it's known as overseas- at a higher level than anyone on this forum. Go figure.

Really - who did you play for?

Also why would you choose to participate in something you think is boring?

He's a troll and will never give exact details. This has been gone over ad nasuem in the 'Let's hear it for US Soccer' thread. Just ignore him

He doesn't only troll futbol fans. I have seen him troll in other topics. His schtick is getting old.

follow Arsenal, good brand of football, classy club

EPL has more exciting end to end & fast paced football.
La Liga is more slow paced and technical.
Bundesliga is somewhere between the two but closer to the EPL.

I'd reccomend the EPL because the competition for a champions league place is very close with Man city, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton all fighting for it and it's usually nerve-wrackingly close during the last few games of the season.
It's also worth noting that the EPL usually has a global audience larger than la liga, bundesliga and serie A combined.

The best players are in La liga.
But the EPL is by far the more exciting league imo.

What's the deal with champions league?
Clubs that place high enough in their respective leagues get invited to a joint group/knockout tournament similar to the world cup but for european club football.
Liverpool vs AC milan, Arsenal vs Barcelona, Porto vs Dortmund etc That's basically what the champions league is. A world cup modelled tournament for european club football. There's big money to be made for clubs who qualify and do well in the tournament. Failure to qualify can for some clubs mean having to sell players when the transfer window comes around and most top players will ask to leave if the team doesn't qualify for the following seasons champions league tournament.

Friendly Matches?
They're just warm up exhibition matches to build up fitness & to practice team tactics in preperation for the start of the season. They do these tours just to drum up support and give foreign fans (that can't travel out to watch them) a chance to see and meet them.

iirc he only went off footie when he started his NBA career

This. Match of the day is an amazing show for beginners. It basically skips out all the boring parts, shows the major moments and close calls then break down how the team won on a tactical level.
