Hi, I just started boxing and I'm having trouble with sore hands. I've taken MMA classes using open fingered MMA gloves before and this isn't the same type of knuckle pain from striking a heavy bag or mitts and brusing knuckles. It feels more like joint pain like my hand had to work really hard in the gloves to make a fist and maintain the proper shape and all my joints are sore because of it.

I'm trying to figure out if this has to do with my gloves or if it's just something my hands have to get used to. The gloves I'm using are Title Gel World Bag gloves in Medium, which are supposedly 16oz. Is this something common with new gloves needing to be broken in or could they be the wrong size or do I just need more hand muscles? My instructor helped with the hand wraps so I'm thinking it probably isn't a problem with the way I'm wrapping my hands. But it feels like I'm fighting to make a proper fist in the boxing gloves when with my MMA gloves it wasn't something I had to think about. Any advice would be appreciated.

Could be because they are not broken in yet. I had a similar issue with my Twins gloves. It takes time but they should feel better after a few more rounds on the heavy bag. Try doing push up while wearing them. It works pretty good at softening the padding.

I had the same issue as well with my Hayabusa Kanpeki Elite 3.0 16oz. After just a couple of rounds my knuckles and especially the middle finger joint of my right hand did bite on every punch. From my experience the gloves need to break in and your hands need to get used to this kind of pressure. One think that helped me a lot was icing my hands twice a day for 20 min - one after the training and one before i go to bed - to keep the inflammation low. Push ups while wearing the can help break them in faster as Kick said.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try the pushups and hopefully they'll break in a bit. Good to know it's a common experience.

Same here. Took me months to break in my Top King Superstars. TK is well known for making nicely padded gloves that fit too tight in the beginning. I also tried using shorter hand wraps (3.5 meters, compared to the usual 5 meters) during the break in period. It fits better now.

Enjoy your new gloves!
