McGregor's retirement/UFC pulling him from the card are both negotiation tactics. It's hard to believe that McGregor would retire out of the blue after insisting on a rematch.

The UFC pulling him from the card is an attempt to strong arm salary negotiations. Missing a press conference seems a petty reason to pull your biggest draw from the card. McGregor's best asset is his ability to sell fights and something that looks like he quite enjoys doing. I'm hard pressed to believe that McGregor refused to attend the press conference because of training obligations. He likely refused to attend in order to gain leverage.

It's also interesting that the UFC have yet to strip him of his title if he is, in fact, actually retired. Clearly, they expect some deal to work out in the future.

You don't need to strip a belt if the guy's retired. If you retire, you vacate.

He will still fight at UFC 200, this is all a marketing ploy imo. Look how huge the buzz is now, they know what they are doing.

Not sure I give the UFC that much credit. But maybe. Think it's all about McGregor's salary... a negotiation the UFC does not want to lose.

Negotiation 101: Don't expect to get more money than you've been getting when coming off a loss

Btw UFC took away Nick Diaz's title shot the first time around when he skipped press conference, so it has been done before

McGregor holds the cards here, losing him off UFC 200 will cost them likely 30-40 million in revenue. He is worth every penny he asks for and should get it. The UFC will settle with him the same way they will with GSP.

And he still headlined that card.

That's not how it works. McGregor is the UFC's biggest draw. He sells pay per views. He can negotiate for what he thinks he's entitled to. The Nick Diaz situation does not apply here at all. If McGregor loves anything, it's the spotlight/media.

McGregor was cageside last week at the fight that led to the death of that Brazilian MMA fighter.

So I take it you don't think that witnessing this played a role in McGregor's retirement announcement?

He can and he is, but he is crazy if he thinks getting finished in the 2nd round to a guy with no training camp will allow him to negotiate for more money in addition to an immediate rematch at the weight he wants

Fight contracts have clauses. Not showing up for media events would be an example.

Sounds like it did affect him spmewhat given his facebook post. But, given the way things have played out re: the UFC's response, it smacks of negotiation.

But you've made my point for me. When have they given immediate rematches in fights that were clear cut and/or not for championships? McGregor got an immediate rematch because he has leverage.
