Need car advice

I looked a hilux, Toyotas can be broken. My wife has a 2016 carolla and it has 130000 trouble free miles. 1 set of brakes, one set of tires and a accessories belt at 127000 miles. It's a great reasonable priced car
All marques have problems though. Don't believe the hype blindly

Hyundai have come along way, not yet at Toyota and Honda levels of reliability but they've definitely gotten better, Nissan is basically a Renault now, best left alone.......
That Hyundai acc(id)ent was brand new less than 10 years ago and it was horrendous on a long windy section compared to my "93 Benz. Actually felt kinda unsafe so never again..

I commute 66 miles a day to and from work, mostly highway miles. I've been hit by deer twice in the last 5 years. It's like they were aiming right for me even though I was going in a straight line and I don't speed. Some people have those grill guard protectors on the front of their vehicles like cops because it's an issue here. Deer lose their mind every year around hunting season, running wild. Poor things.

I'd like to keep it under 15k but I will push it past that for a great value.

Push bars are fine on older models but they will block your parking sensors, lane assist, adaptive cruise and front cameras on anything newer.

Toyotas are great and heavily reliable but $15k isn't putting you in a new one and there isn't often good used ones around.

Honda/Acura is a more likely find. What's the weather situation? For the miles you drive, if there's any snow involved you may want a smaller suv.

Snows a few times a year here but usually not much. Most of the year it's hot and humid.

That's too bad, had been thinking about one recently. Is there a consensus on which year they became less reliable?

Your comparing Apples with oranges

From 1999 onwards you'll see more components being shared, later on it's platforms and engines..... Research the model you're interested in, JDM models have been more safe regarding reliability.......

Any Toyota under 15k are going to have a lot of miles on it. The advantage of having an accord or civic instead are there's parts for days.

Die-hard Toyota guy. Just do it. Unless youre trying to flex and look badass, you cannot go wrong with a corolla or rav4. Have both, and had zero major issues for over a decade, and everyone I know with them have had no issues. Just embrace the bore.

Quick look at the local dealership near me and had a 16' corolla with 130k miles for 8.5k. Not too bad compared with just a year or so ago.

Shameful representation of the lineage. Looks like a fucking Maserati!

All cars in recent years have many more reliability issues than they used to. Mainly this is due to manufacturers having to get government mandated gas milage and using turbos on everything. And the move to CVT transmissions.

However, Subaru, Toyota, and Honda still remain the most over all reliable. Large SUVs and trucks are usually pretty reliable too.

I have a 2012 Honda Civic with 300K miles and only repair done on it so far is a starter and alternator. Have done a lot of maintenance things like brakes and belts but not much in repairs. Also have a 2014 Forester that hasn't had any repairs at all on it yet, just maintenance. I had a Kia Forte , that was the biggest POS I ever owned. Apparently Kia had an entire decade where they were manufacturing rod bearings wrong and their engines were blowing up at well under 100K miles. Mine popped at 75K out of nowhere. I always do all the recommended maintenance and usually ahead of schedule. Went to go on the high way one day, sounded fine and all of the sudden the rod went through the block. Never will buy a Kia again. They got sued for it but only half of the cars they made with that defect were covered under that lawsuit and they refused to fix mine because it wasn't under that law suit and as a second owner it wasn't under warranty.

But if you don't know cars and buy used definitely take it to a good mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection and if the dealer won't let you then don't buy from them.

I needed to get my Dad a car because his van had completely rusted out. I was looking <12k also, but everything in that price range was pretty roached out.

I ended up spending 4.5k, and got him an 08' Buick witch 60k on clock. I knew the seller who was a GM engineer, and this was his mothers car who is like 90 years old. The 3800s are supposed to be very reliable, and cheap to repair.

I wish this had been a full size with the bench front seat w/ column shifter, but its a midsize. I still think it was a good guy.

Can you even get a decent used vehicle for 15k or less anymore? I used to get a new daily driver every 10 years or 100,000 miles just for something new but I won't do that these days with the prices that are charged. I'll drive what I have till it falls apart on the road before I get a new ride.

Yes and no. The market has changed
15k is a weird number.

My father taught me to flip cars starting at 12yrs. This was classified ads.
I would make the calls and report back to him.

On Sundays we would go down to the loading docks of the STL post dispatch and get the paper while they were being loaded onto the trucks.
We had rolls of quarters and we would get to calling.

Personally, I would buy a 2006-2008 Subaru that needs head gaskets.

3k for the shell
3k for a full reseal with decking and timing components
good for another 10 years or more

If you can find a lot that sells salvage titles that could be a deal. I bought a 2000 Toyola avalon 100k miles for 5.5 for my niece from this joint

No car expert here but I've seen Buick near the top 5 in terms of reliability. Under the likes of Toyota, Honda and Subaru.

Another Toyota vote here. Other than the clear coat on mine taking a shit, my Fj Cruiser has required very
little in the way of repairs. Wife has a Highlander, which has been great.

My next ride will be a 4runner or a Tacoma.
