Vanessa Hudgens to Star in NBC's DC Comics Comedy POWERLESS

Vanessa-Hudgens-Bongo-022216-Dragonlord.jpg

Vanessa Hudgens is getting back to work. The Grease Live alum has been tapped to star in NBC's DC Comics comedy pilot Powerless, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The single-camera workplace comedy is set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The comedy is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of super heroes and villains.

Hudgens will topline the pilot and portray Emily Locke, an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people, Emily likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done. She finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city.

Powerless is being written by Ben Queen (A to Z), who will exec produce alongside Michael Patrick Jann, with the latter set to direct the pilot. Christina Kirk co-stars.

For Hudgens, the role marks her first gig after she earned critical praise for her role as Rizzo in Fox's Grease Live. The High School Musical grad earned rave reviews for her performance, which took place the day after her father passed away from stage four cancer. She dedicated her performance to him.

That actually sounds like the awesome premise to a show.

Marvel is also doing something similar with a Damage Control TV series. Published first in 1989, it's a comedy about overworked, underpaid clean-up crew of the Marvel Universe.

Early odds that one of her love interests is a super and is hiding it or was a super and is currently depowered?

Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk and Christina Kirk Join DC Comics Comedy POWERLESS

NBC's DC Comics comedy pilot Powerless is rounding out its cast. Community grad Danny Pudi, Suburgatory alum Alan Tudyk and A to Z's Christina Kirk have boarded the comedy starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The single-camera workplace comedy is set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The project is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.

Tudyk is set to play Del, Emily's (Hudgens) new boss in the claims department. Del has just been promoted — not through any merit of his own, but because he’s the owner’s son. A self-proclaimed “rich, over-educated globetrotting wastrel,” Del is a power-mad disastrous dictator of a boss.

Pudi will play Teddy, Emily's best friend at work and her trusted confidante. He spends his days creating time-wasting pranks as a way to make their office, the "least super place on earth," just a little less "unsuper."

Kirk will portray Jackie. A fan of super heroes, Jackie has plastered her office cubicle with beefcake shots of super guys. New claims department boss Del makes her his personal assistant, and she begins buckling under his unreasonable and impossible demands.

Danny Pudi without Donald Glover is suspect.
Pudi recently guest starred in Dr. Ken. He played a womanizing jerk. Loved it. Based on the description of his role in Powerless, it seems like a good fit for him.

Love the premise. I don't know if they can sustain it for 3 seasons. Is this going to be a sitcom or will there be a central plot?

Interesting idea, and I like Tudyk, but the trailer... ugh I dunno.

NBC sitcom #2423425 yaay. It could work, but the trailer looks very generic.

Do you guys remember that show that was going to be about an insurance company in the DC universe?

Apparently it's been retooled into Better Off Ted in the DC Universe.

Powerless used to be about a young woman working at an insurance company in the DC universe, catering to bystanders caught up in superpowered brawls. But then its premise underwent a major re-working, and now a new TV spot for the show shows us just how different it is.

Vanessa Hudgens’ protagonist Emily Locke is no longer an employee at insurance company RetCon, but instead the new head of R&D at Wayne Security—a subdivision of Bruce Wayne’s vast corporation that apparently builds gadgets to help the public safeguard itself from superpowered moments of hysteria and public property discussion. Which means the cast no longer really works in an office, and instead, as you can see in the trailer below, in a zany research lab where wacky products are tested (and fail miserably in the process):
