I think he pulled the trigger quickly because Kawaii was about to re-sign the the Raptors and he gave them a set date on which to get Paul George by or he's going to re-sign with the Raptors....so Balmer pulled the trigger so he can get both Kawaii and Paul.

Kawaii basically said, get Paul within 48 hours and I'll sign with you, if not then i'm re-signing with the Raptors.

Where I would perhaps fault him, is for letting Kawhi play GM and giving up so much for Paul George...just to appease Kawhi. Never let the players play GM, unless it's Lebron. However, if that was the price, you can't blame Balmer for rolling the dice to get him. He was easily, and with good reason, the most coveted free agent in recent memory. If you want to win now, you can't look too far ahead in the future. And hey, he signed for four years. If the Clips make it to the promised land in any of those years, the move would've paid off.

The Raps made a similar move all the same, in trading their star away, who actually loved TO, for ONE year of Kawhi. It was a big gamble, and if it doesn't work out, Mesai ain't much of a messiah. Paid off for the Raps. The Clips have three more years to see if it pays off for them. Also, the Clips have had many high picks in their history. Hasn't done a damn thing for them. Might as well take a chance on Kawhi.
