Bats were suggested because they have a strain that is 96% similar to the Chinese virus, but it turns out that 4% difference would represent 50 years of evolution.
Pangolins are known to carry coronaviruses similar to this, but all known strains are even more distant than the bats.
Snakes are ruled out also.
So the science is still out on this. Scientists want to make expeditions to China for sample gathering.
