According to military sources close to The Aviationist, a big hunt is underway in the eastern Med: several MPA aircraft, including U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon jets operating from NAS Sigonella, Sicily, are looking for one, possibly two, Russian Navy submarines operating in the vicinity of a group of warships of the NATO Maritime Group.

nuclear or diesel-powered subs have proved to be able to slip in the middle of the multi-billion-dollar aircraft carrier’s defensive screen, while avoiding detection by ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) aircraft, and pretend-sinking U.S. (or allied) carriers and most of their escort vessels.

Those were scripted drills, with the flattops put in the most challenging conditions for training purposes; still, the simulated sinkings once again prove that aircraft carriers’ underwater defenses, albeit excellent, are not impenetrable and subs still pose a significant threat to powerful Carrier Strike Groups.

Especially when the attacker is a quite advanced Oscar II class nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine (SSGN) using long-range SS-N-19 “Shipwreck” ASCMs (anti-ship cruise missiles).

Based on the latest reports, 8 Oscar IIs are in active service built in the 1980s and early 1990s, eight remain in service. Even though deemed to be inferior to those of the Akula II, the acoustic performance of the Oscar II class is believed to be superior to early Akula-class submarine.

In 2016 Russia has started a multiyear plan to modernise all its Project 949A Oscar II-class subs that includes replacing the 24 SS-N-

Dont carrier's have a few if not one submarine with the carrier

Is that something that typically gets leaked?

Name names, Aviationist.

Why is the Akula Class considered greater than the Oscar if its acoustics are inferior?

I believe this is just horseshit stuff that the military does to justify increased military spending. If the threat was real, you would never show your opponent what you are capable of. Look at how long the stealth bomber was under wraps. Look how the military still won't release performance specs of the SR-71. We definitely weren't showing off the stealth bomber to the soviets to show them we have a stealthy plane now.

Care to speculate?

The Ruskies and yanks played underwater cat and mouse for decades during the Cold War. Difference is the Russian sub fleet suffered immensely from the collapse of the USSR with many falling to neglect and disrepair. Not so in the USN.

In short I would be extremely surprised if a sub like this had not had its various signatures and capabilties thoroughly mapped and understood by now. Sure, it might be shadowing various NATO vessels, but it might also have a shadow all of its own with Mk48 torpedoes ready and waiting.

>chasing us is a sign of aggression
>as a result I will chase you around

Same games we played when I was in.

What most people fail to understand is an aircraft carriers primary job in a nuclear war. It to launch it's nuclear armed aircraft. Staying around after that is a bonus.

well its to my understand russian subs are kinda noisy, not as bad as Chinese but still

Maybe I read the article wrong, but it said this was a drill where the CV was placed in the worst possible situation. So.... Nothing to see here or did I read it wrong?
