Thanks for the history lesson, doc. But in 2014, anyone who uses 'Canada' is using it to refer to a political entity, while using (North) America is a geographical one. I like etymology as much as the next guy, but it seems that when we are talking about sociopolitical movements of the 21st century, we should think about the meanings of the words in the 21st century, not the 17th.
You missed the point. He's saying that it's not ironic for natives to call themselves Native Canadian because Canada's native heritage is right there in the name, always has been.
