Native-Americans in Canada

Thanks for the history lesson, doc. But in 2014, anyone who uses 'Canada' is using it to refer to a political entity, while using (North) America is a geographical one. I like etymology as much as the next guy, but it seems that when we are talking about sociopolitical movements of the 21st century, we should think about the meanings of the words in the 21st century, not the 17th.

You missed the point. He's saying that it's not ironic for natives to call themselves Native Canadian because Canada's native heritage is right there in the name, always has been.

Im sure there are ways you can get your "status" (if that's what you want) . I will talk to a good friend of mine who is more up to speed on the legal side of the subject. (for the record I'm an English born Canadian who has some very close friends who have been through similar issues)

Sam, your a fucking gent! I hope your Sambama care for white women only goes well. God speed to you sir!!

i have applied for my status 2 years ago 2011 and they told me i need to wait another 18 months im not looking for a fucking hand-out im looking for was was promised to me.

I never implied you were looking for a "hand out", fuck you, you prick

In Canada they call themselves natives. Or at least in T.O. i know lots of natives and my GF is native. Like straight %80(cause no ones is really 100% anymore). she has her status card and everything. Pretty sweet just flash the card at almost any major retailer and get %5 off. It rly adds up when im buying a tv or a ps4.

they dont take offence to being called indian either or at least the ones i know dont. One of the local native newspapers is called Indian Life or someshit. at the huge pow wow at the rogers center there's lots of souvenirs that has the word Indian on it, t shirts, posters, trinkets etc.

woooo %5 off my ps4 jkjk

Do you want my pity or something?

Second question: Do you, personally, prefer to be called a Native, Aboriginal, First Nations, Indian, or perhaps North American Indigenous?

ffs, everything was going decent until the last 3 posts. I hate you people.

lol just nothing really in 2009
i watched as everyone of my cousins aunts uncles nephews
each collected 10,000 each . i was pissed myself being 22 working fulltime for an apprenticeship. just grown to respect it i hated being native in edmonton for ever
i did a bit of research and my father schooled me on it and it made me sad as fuck
i just thought i would hit up sherdog for some opinions

Try joining a union, a guy I used to work (also more or less my mentor) with joined one and they payed for his training*. We used to make the same now he's making weekly after taxes what I make a month before taxes.

He's also native.

*They only pay for the first time, so don't fail your tests.

I would think they would want to distance themselves from the word "Canada" so as to further highlight that they were there first. Like, "hey, we were here when this place wasn't Canada, or the US, or Mexico; it just was, man."

Hence, the FNMI (first nations, meti, inuit) change.

IN alberta you rarely get anyone (shops) letting you not pay taxes.

I don't mind being called indian - even though it's out-dated - since I've been called worse.

And there are alot of idiots in this thread whose knowledge about "natives" is every damn redneck lie/stereotype/mis-information.
