Native-Americans in Canada

Do Canadians have to deal with the "the only real Canadians are the Natives" nonsense, too? Gotta love that one. It's a handy shibboleth for sussing out morons.

Natives in Canada are generally not referred to as Native Americans. Like black Canadians aren't African Americans.

What do they call them? First Nationals?

Native Canadians? Aboriginal people?

Other that the name of the OP I don't mind that kind of video. That culture was culturally gutted in the 1800 and 1900s.

What I took away from that video is that the English and the French were vicious, malevolent liars. Thank god we Canadians and Americans aren't English or French, and thus don't have anything to do with that! Now we can put it all behind us...eh?

(I like how he used "eh." Was he being ironic in using the colonizer's interjection, or just woefully unaware at how badly his mind has been infiltrated by The Man? Fight the power.)

its a huge stereotype

Native Canadians...see, that's odd to me that a group of people that feel so marginalized would use that term. Canada is a country, not a continent. A country is a political entity. The aboriginal people predate the political entity known as Canada. A continent, on the other hand, is a geographic, not a political, entity and thus is less saddled with the baggage that comes with politics. I'm surprised that they wouldn't prefer "Native American," using "American" in the continental sense.

I would think they would want to distance themselves from the word "Canada" so as to further highlight that they were there first. Like, "hey, we were here when this place wasn't Canada, or the US, or Mexico; it just was, man."
