Nate Diaz says no to McGregor trilogy fight

Are you interested in Diaz vs McGregor III?

"Hes got work to do"

Translation:

"I would love that fight (money), now I just need to provoke Conrad into taking it by undermining him".

More likely translation:

"There is zero possibility the UFC gives me the highest profile fight in the sport on the last fight of my contract."

Its still unlikely they even let him fight Poirer without signing a new contract, but Conor? Literally not a chance in the world.

I'd really like to see Poirier vs Nate. It's pretty obvious the UFC was HOPING to do Nate vs McG III later in 2022 when Irishman's leg has fixed.
I think UFC wanted to keep Nate's last fight on his current contract for that McG fight.
I'd like to see Poirier vs Nate, and then the UFC can give Nate a new contract after that.

Hopefully UFC will make this fight and if so, I can see this being a Co-main event in a few months -- they just have to find a slot for it.

It's clear the UFC isn't interested in it. Dana has already said Conor is fighting Dustin when he comes back. So why even entertain the idea of it if you're Nate?

I’m just guessing here, but I really think Nate just wants to fight out his contract asap. He’s one of the few UFC guys I actually could see as being attractive to the boxing world and these circus fights going on. He’s not going to beat any high level guy. And doesn’t have the power to get a fluke ko. He’s almost exactly what Jake Paul would like in an opponent.

I’m not convinced at all that anything he says these days is any kind of negotiation tactic. Nobody has any idea if Conor actually ever fights again. Let alone when. Nate can fight whomever, and be free. I think that’s his priority right now. If he re-signs then I was wrong. If he leaves most of the people in this thread were wrong.

That's a lot to make out of a 53 second interview. No actual news here.

Love how it spawns a 4 page thread.
Absolutely the exact same situation as always.

Nate fights Leon after everyone shits all over him.
Now Leon fights for the title,
after 4 decisions & an eye poke...
yet he didn't finished Nate.

Cue everyone' shitting on Nate.

It's a late career fight, for both. When they're done with the sport, have a war. You could say they're both already done, and I don't see Nate getting wins at WW, he can at LW. Conor also could keep losing, but he's not that old or beat up yet, I don't think.

I’d watch it, sort of makes sense too, they’ve both been fairly inactive lately

Notreally interested in either of them to be honest. Neither of them seem to have their head in the game anymore, and once a fighters interest in being the best is gone I tend to lose interest in them.

Funny Nate says Conor has a lot of work to do yet he hasn’t won a fight since 2019. Or should I say he won TWO fights since 2016?

With one fight left on his UFC contract, Nate Diaz has no real interest in running it back against Conor McGregor in a trilogy.

Despite a pair of lucrative fights that saw Diaz choke out McGregor in their first encounter before losing a close majority decision in the rematch, the Stockton native doesn’t feel as if a third fight makes much sense for him as he potentially approaches free agency.

“Not right now,” Diaz told Adam’s Apple when asked about facing McGregor again. “He’s got a lot of work to do.”

McGregor is currently recovering from a devastating broken leg suffered in his own trilogy with Poirier this past July. The Irish superstar underwent surgery to repair the damage just a day after the event ended, and while he’s been very active in training lately, it’s not likely that he’ll return to action until mid-to-late 2022.

Despite Diaz’s objections to the fight, it’s entirely possible that the UFC would like to at least explore the possibility of booking Diaz against McGregor again, especially considering the massive pay-per-view sales surrounding their first two bouts.

The first fight between them at UFC 196 reportedly sold over 1.3 million buys, while the rematch at UFC 202 topped out around 1.6 million buys. Both fight cards still sit in the top 10 for all-time pay-per-view sales in UFC history.

That said, Diaz still prefers a matchup with Dustin Poirier after the two have engaged in a war of words through interviews and social media for the past several months.

“I’m on my last fight on my contract right now,” Diaz said. “I would like to fight Dustin Poirier now. Next month when sh*t changes or people win and start doing something entertaining, or something going on, it’s all going to be different, I’m sure.”

After a fight between them was scrapped back in 2018, Diaz and Poirier have stayed circling each other as possible opponents, but the matchup was never rebooked by the UFC. Lately, both camps have asked the UFC to make the fight a reality, but the promotion has yet to actually make any kind of official offer.

Diaz has continued to take shots at Poirier, especially over social media, although that’s only because he can’t get the UFC to actually offer him contract to fight

“That sh*t’s obnoxious to me,” Diaz said of social media. “For me, I got a bigger following than the rest of the people and they’re not letting me fight, so what do I got to do? I’ve got to sh*t on them from the internet.”
