My Uncle Works for Nintendo
Delightful article concerning Firewatch from the Campo Santo quarterly for old timers like me who lived the reference:
A month before Campo Santo announced the cost of buying a copy of Firewatch, one person predicted with absolute confidence what the price would be. “$20,” posted someone with the screenname Pingu the Noscoper on the Steam community forums. “[M]y uncle works with the game he asked if $20 was good and I said yeah"...

I actually don't know this reference, is this like "I met BJ Penn at the airport"?

Exactly.

Except that meeting BJ Penn would always be used as the pretext of "evidence" to substantiate some wild rumor asserted by that person (ex. some fighter has an injury and nobody knows about it).
Just click the link to the story in the OP. This shouldn't be confusing.

That's good stuff. I didn't realize "My Uncle Works At Nintendo" was a meme specifically. I always thought "My [relative/friend] works for [whatever company is relevant to the subject] and told me [a bunch of made up bullshit]" was pretty common, especially on the internets. Makes sense though, that company has been around forever.

"My uncle works at Nintendo and let's me plow Boise-dime hookers on the house."

I knew a guy whose uncle worked for atari. we would play games without the case, just the board inside.
