I woke up and my mom had texted me pretty late. So I called her and she told me that my stepdad managed to shoot himself in the hand unloading his pistol. He keeps on beside his bed, usually unloaded. But he was out of town for the last week and had it loaded in case someone broke in while my mom was home alone.

So he managed to discharge the gun. My mom wanted me to go to the house and let out the dogs and feed them. Holy moly, looks like a murder scene. Blood spatter on the wall. The bathroom sink is covered in blood.

It's wild.

Can you post pictures of blood? Because I took pictures.

Seriously... that sucks.

I'm so paranoid about the direction a gun is pointing. At least my dad got that drilled into me. I'll freak out if it's even pointing towards my foot.

My wife on the hand?? That's another story... Let's say there were three grown men diving for cover after she finally shot her first clay at the range.

I'm 90 percent sure it was just a matter of being tired and somehow his finger grabbed the trigger. When he gets out of surgery, I'm gonna ask. He's out here making responsible gun owners look bad.

If feel bad for your step father but this idea of keeping a loaded gun bedside is bat shit crazy. What are the chances that your mother half asleep, confronted by someone brazen enough to enter a locked house and her bedroom, grabs the loaded gun and busts a cap anywhere close to the intruder?

My old roommate shot a round through my wall cleaning his gun drunk.

I promptly moved out. How bad is his hand? I imagine a gun shot will fuck your hand up perminantly

My mom is a damn good shot, for what it's worth. Haven't tested her aim half asleep though.

From what my mom's told me, he might lose a finger, but they don't expect any real loss of function in the hand. Guess he mostly got his finger/knuckle.

Glad it wasn't worse, OP.

Me too.

Time stopped for a moment when my said "Steve shot himself..."

For the fraction of a second before "...in the hand", I was fucking terrified.

She could have said that a little better.

I'm just trying to think of a way that doesn't sound just as bad.

The very first friend I ever had when I was a kid, found his dad's gun and accidentally killed himself...strange haven't thought about that in fucking years, glad your old man's ok.

You’re seriously underestimating the power of adrenaline. My house alarm went off at 2am one night because a door wasn’t closed completely closed and opened up.

I exploded out of bed and was instantly awake and completely alert. I keep a shotgun in our closet (unloaded) and ran downstairs with it in just a few seconds.

My wife laughed at me and asked what I was planning to do with it. But it was better than nothing...

Anyway, house invasions are a real thing and stories of families being tied up, beaten and sometimes killed happen here.

Unfortunate part of life in the big city.

Yeah, but she had been up all night, so it's understandable.

I once did the same thing to her when I was 16. I went on a trip with a friend, and our plans to stay with friends fell through. It was 10 degrees outside, so I was alternating keeping the heat on in the car, and once it got toasty, I'd turn it off and doze off. Rinse and repeat.

Well, I dozed off without turning off the car at one point and cops came to check it out. They found liquor in the car, and their punishment was to make us call our parents and dump out the booze.

I wake her up at like 4 in the morning with "I crashed in the car". Poor mama almost had a heart attack.

By describing the injury before the event.

He hurt his hand pretty badly. His gun went off.

It's bad news delivery 101.

What you're describing "shotgun", "closet", "unloaded", and "downstairs", is rational and nothing like a loaded handgun at bed side.

I'm aware of home invasions and break ins, so I have pair of sticks on all three floors of my house and I keep a tactical flashlight in the bedroom. Between the blinding light at 2000lumens and the strobe mode which disorients anyone, I don't have to worry about waking from a sleep and having an accident, or having to aim.
