Hello,

I've been looking for a MMA type gloves mainly to use in my Les Mills Body Combat classes. However i find most gloves tend to be big on my small hands so find sometimes difficult to find a pair that fits me. I didn't want expensive pair, and found these Aasta MMA/grappling gloves from eBay (

You can use any gloves you want for that garbage, it's not like there is actually any serious punching going on.

Not trying to be mean, but that is akin to asking what brand of MMA shorts are the most suitable for the UFC Trainer game on Xbox or which gloves to wear while doing a Tae-Bo class.

Either your thai gloves or your bag mitts will be more than adequate.

@ Katriona1992: Thanks for the info. I actually want to use a pair of gloves for Body Combat, hence why i brought these but when it comes to sparring/punch on the punch bag then yes i most likely would use my Thai boxing gloves or my bag mitt with wraps of course if i feel the MMA gloves are not suitable for this.

@Denno: Well for Body Combat i've used, Muay Thai gel wrap type gloves, Lonsadale leather weight lifting gloves: http://images.lonsdale.com/images/products/76107099_l.jpg as well as Lonsdale Gel Padded gloves: http://boxingtimes.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/-181092509439240800.jpg which i found didn't really last long as the rubber started to come off and the material ripped and around the fingers. Plus i found that they got to sweaty as they are closed unlike these MMA gloves that are open palm. I think the Thai gloves not going be adequate for Body Combat as you said there isn't any physical punching going on, only the air which has no resistance and i think it look a bit silly wearing full contact type gloves just for a high intense martial art inspired fitness class! I've not played UFC on the Xbox but do want to get that game!

So what I got from this thread is that there was no actual hitting involved in the Les Mills Body Combat system... so I looked for some videos...

Do other people wear gloves in the class? I think the general consensus on this board would be that it's great to participate in a fitness class, but that using ANY type of glove if not actually... um... using the glove would look silly.

I don't really understand why you would need the gloves? This reminds me of how pissed off I would get watching Billy Blanks on those commercials wearing handwraps... WTF?? If you're not punching anything, why the **** are you wearing handwraps?

Also I should point out that having seen some of the videos, don't ever use their "combat stance" for actual combat.

I can understand wearing 16oz gloves for a fitness class since adding the weight to your hands helps to condition your arms and shoulders. It isn't much different than why a boxer uses them, they help promote hand speed and development

There isn't any physical contact with anyone in Body Combat it is high intensity class which using inspired martial arts moves on a basic level and mostly a cardio workout. Yes as most Les Mills Body Combat Instructors (including the creator Dan Cohen) tend to wear MMA gloves, like the Hayabusa http://www.mmafactory.co.uk/ekmps/shops/mmafactory/images/hayabusa-mma-gloves-black-69-p.jpg, inner (gel) gloves or hand wraps. They do encourage members to wear gloves if they wish and i've seen some people in the class wearing trainer type gloves. Wearing gloves or wraps in Body Combat serves three functions: 1. It is consistent with the essence of the programme and it's martial arts origins, therefore adds to the visible authenticity of the class. 2. It encourages instructors and participants to get into character. To act, move and think like a fighter. 3. Wearing wraps in particular can encourage correct alignment of the wrist and also act as a reminder to clench the fist at the imagined point of impact. Personally, i find wearing gloves when doing Body Combat gives me wrist support and the little extra weight also helps to build up speed and power when i am throwing punches. The combat stance is the basic fundemental needed in all martial arts as you know and it is the starting point as some basic martial art moves from Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Karate, Taekwondo etc is performed.

@Championstuff: Yes you are right. To be honest since i've been wearing gloves, i found my shoulders and arms have toned up quite well and when i did Muay Thai/Kickboxing i was told that my punches was strong too!

I been told i can't wash Boxing/Muay Thai/Bag Mitts etc gloves as it destroys the lining, so i guess it's the same for MMA gloves too? At the moment i use those scented dehumidifier bags to keep my Muay Thai gloves fresh and dry which works =)

They sell women specific gloves (uh I hope you're a women, no offense if you're not). Also you could try a large kids gloves. There's a lady I practice with, she has tiny hands, she just went with a kid's glove.
 
@firstDan: Yes i am. I was also thinking about getting junior gloves, but i think they would be a bit tight on me as they may be a bit smaller then my hands. I guess it's what i feel comfortable in too.

I'm gonna be testing out my new gloves in Body Combat on Weds 28th March!

They did feel a bit strange and did look a big on my hands but after once i started to concentrate on my Body Combat, i kinda didn't take notice of it. Just need to break them in now with a punch bag ;P
 
DO NOT use those gloves on a heavy bag, if you can throw a punch worth anything, you WILL hurt yourself.
I broke a few knuckles in my right hand hitting a heavy bag wearing mma gloves that were better made then that, while wrapping my hands before, and it wasn't the most pleasent thing.
 
You should be wrapping your hands to fill all that space... But yeah, since you don't actually have to punch anything you don't need to wear gloves.
 
@bleaK: Oh dear. I don't have a heavy punch, but there is a bit of power behind it. They seem to be very padded especially around the knuckle area which should protect them, but as you can see the size of the gloves to my with my small hands, i don't think they would be properly supported. However i tend to use hand or gel wraps with my thai boxing gloves when i did muay thai/kickboxing.

@AnarchyCamp: Well i guess it's down to preferance and as i am now used to wearing gloves for Combat i properly would feel odd without them.
