My little cousins came to Canada from Tanzania about 4 years ago.
Their parents got divorced so they came here with their dad who wasn’t the greatest guy. Their mom was even worse.
The boys were 11 and 13 when they got here.
I’m older and grew up in Canada. I took a big role in helping them get their start. I helped them with homework and took them on field trips to amusement parks and the museum and the science centre and brought them food like all the time.
When they turned 14-15 they started committing their first petty crimes. Shoplifting, vandalism. I bailed them out from the cops a few times and asked them not to do it again.
Now the 17 year old is committing credit card fraud and hanging out with real creepy gangbanger types. The 15 year old has a court date for robbery outside the public library.
The older one I think I’m done with and I don’t even let him into my house anymore. I had lunch with and talked to the younger one today and tried to tell him he can do anything he wants and have any kind of future he wants if he starts making good decisions right now.
And I told him if he doesn’t stop right now then I’m going to turn my back on him for good.
They were good kids but just turned into such shitty young men and I think I’ve done all I could. That’s it.
