Yep, nothing more credible when it comes to ghost stories than a half asleep little kid in the pitch black who's afraid of the dark!
Might as well add in "I had just finished watching Poltergeist and listening to my dad read "scary stories to read in the dark" in there too.

This is true, TS.
Dogs can see things that we can't, my dog used to walk around my place perfectly fine until a few months ago, now for some reason he barks all night while looking down the stairs and he's scared to walk through the hall way by himself. I try to think nothing of it, but he never used to do it so it makes you think.
Your story (TS) sounds very creepy though, something to do with that basement just doesn't seem right at all. I'd get the hell out of there, man. Fuck that shit.

is that a face
This is all gonna sound a little bit like the amityville horror, but I live in the basement apartment of a 3 flat in chicago where a family was stabbed to death in the late 80s by one of the sons. In our unit, there's a little crawlspace under the stairs with a half-sized door to get in there. Lately, one of our cats will sit there staring at the door all night, it really creeps me out. Idunno if he's chasing bugs or mice under there, or sees something or senses something that we can't.
Shit.. I wouldn't want to live in a place like that. When you bought the place did they tell you that happened? or did you have to dig up that info yourself? some people like to hide that kind of stuff to sell houses quicker.
That's really strange though, if I had a dog or cat that was staring at a door like that and I knew about the murders there, I would be freaked right out. I really believe animals can see things we can't, just like they can hear things that we can't.
Yeah, we knew about it when we moved in. My girlfriend's parents own the building, they bought it shortly after the murders in 89 i think. We're basically only here to save money for a year or two and put a downpayment on a house in the suburbs. This area is rather dicey and we don't want to raise out daughter around this.
Sounds like a plan, I'm sure you can stick it out since things will get good for you in the future if you do. IMO, getting a house and raising a family is actually a great accomplishment, it's my main goal in life.
Careful though, you might just go to bed one of these nights and then wake up in the crawlspace LOL. Goodnight bro!
Well, if anything's in there (evil or otherwise) i'll find out later this week. Gotta rearrange it to make room for more shit we gotta pack away. Sick of tripping over books and clothes every time i try to go in the living room to work.
Says the guy with Sasquatch in his name.

It's because I find Sasquatch comical, not because I believe squatches exist. Of course they don't. That's almost as silly as believing in "spirits" of dead things hanging around on earth and choosing random moments in the dark to make creepy noises and "show themselves" to people for no other reason than to frighten them.
Liar.
You think Bigfoot is real and that he's coming to get you.
Lol, I was dating a girl at the time, she lived with me so if I found an ex in that basement I would probably just laugh my ass off.
All my exes are kind of scary and I avoid them, so the next time I see one of them I will send them your way.
