Time to try some EVP recordings. Put a recorder down in the basement and let it run all night and then run it through a sound editing program. You should see in the waveform if you get any weird spikes so you can then listen back to see if you hear anything there.

It's probably your imagination running wild honestly. Recently I saw this really strange Halloween mask at the store and 3 times this month I've had lucid dreams of someone standing over my bed watching me sleep with the mask. Scares the shit out of me but it's just a dream obviously. Different things affect us differently for whatever reason.

You seeing the writing in the dirt freaked you and made your mind susceptible for future incidents that you could attribute to the writing. Still, EVP recordings would be cool to try.

Light a candle and when you think you hear noises, slowly walk down into your basement. I find movie protagonists tend to get their answer about whether or not their ghosts in moments like that.
