I was caught in a fifty-fifty position on the top and I was trying to pass. My right leg got caught between his legs as I was trying to put top pressure and spin to the side. Its like the stretch when you lay down on your back with your right leg in a 90 degree angle and your left knee is pushing your right ankle to stretch that hip/knee. I heard a LOUD pop. The pop itself scared me but I felt no pain. When I heard it I stopped the roll and assessed the problem. I didnt feel any pain but it felt that I just knee'd a thai pad and my knee was ringing. I could walk fine after wards and move my knee is full range of motion. Right now after about an hour it feels fine. I can walk fine. I feel no pain but I feel discomfort in my knee. I am more scared than hurt right now because of all the horror stories I hear about knee problems. Its mainly discomfort on the outside lower portion of my knee. Strangely my ankle feels funny too. Did I tear any ligaments do you guys think? I'm just freaking out and sad I might not be able to train.

p.s after about an hour or so. there is not swelling. if there is it is very small amounts. when I plant my foot on the guard and twist my leg I can feel the discomfort and little pain.

I'm on my third pop. The last one came about a month ago, after having none for several years. You already know the bad news. The good news is, after talking to a doctor about it, getting an MRI, etc., I was/am fine. It turns out that the pop is actually a release of pressure, and usually means nothing tore. The quiet ones are dangerous.

My knee didn't swell when I popped it. Went to the doctor and it was a sprained MCL. Get it checked out. Crappy way to start the year man, sorry.

I know man. I had plans to compete like every month but I guess those plans are out the window. Is a sprained mcl the same as a tear? Would I need surgery? Would an Xray be sufficient?

X-rays dont show ligaments or soft tissue damage, you'll need an MRI or CT Scan to see that, but its extremely unlikely they will order one without first doing an x-ray. An MCL sprain will likely not be operated on. My doctor went as far as to tell me that 90% of the knee injuries he sees dont call for surgery.

I had the exact same thing happen as you, 50/50 position on top trying to pass, same exact position.

Take time off, do your psychical therapy and be smart when coming back to training.

Sounds like you maybe sprained your ACL. I sprained my MCL two months ago and finally with a lot of physio therapy I am going to try my first class back tomorrow. Start the physio as soon as your doctor says you can. Physio helps a ton!

Similar to what i felt guy shot a low single i got a lock round his waist trying to lift from a sitting position, he pulled my foot up whilst putting his weight on my knee next second "crack" a full wrestling room went quiet and everyone looked at me, i was just shocked at the sound no pain, usually i'm flexible at the knee and rubber leg quite a lot in scrambles but i had been in a competition the day before and had 20 mins worth of matches so was a bit stiff and went boxing for 1 hr 30mins which turned into a conditioning session, then after 1 hr 30mins of wrestling the pop occured right at the end of the session, i was going to carry but the coach told me to go rest i walked around sat down for 5 mins got up and it started to hurt and stiffen, next day had bruising from inner bleeding and swelling, 4 months on its still stiff set me back quite a bit, luckily it was the day after a comp and not just before. I didn't need surgery but i might as well had given the time its taken to recover, but at least not cartilage will be scraped off so i lose flexibility in the only place i'm flexible.

My knee popped that same way. I didn't go to the doctor but I'm quite certain it was a tear in my LCL. It didn't hurt the same day, but by late that evening it was swelling up and I could barely walk on it. Couldn't really train for a month, after two to three months I was able to train but had to be careful with it, couldn't do triangles on one side, etc. It's now been a year and it feels 100%.

I had a similar problem last week. My instructor was demonstrating a judo throw on me, and somehow my knee got stuck behind him and popped quite a few times as it hyperextended. As it was happening, I thought for sure my knee was wrecked, but I didn't get the severe pain and swelling associated with tears. I can still walk on it, although it is definitely stiff and sore. I'm in wait and see mode to figure out if I need to go to the doctor. So far it has been feeling a bit better each day, but I'm still a bit nervous there might be some serious damage. Reading a lot of information on the internet about knee injuries, there seems to be a strong coloration between pops and tears.

I actually had the same thing happen. I was lucky enough to only sprain my LCL. It took about 4 months to get back to rolling. I could work stand up but I couldnt sit on my heels at all. Luckily I didnt need surgury, as I one always needs with ACL injuries so I was happy for that.

R.I.C.E it and find something to do for 4 months.

Oh yeah, also the obligatory "See a doctor blah blah blah"

Thank you guys for the advice. It helped alot on recovering my knee and gave me a piece of mind. The day after it hurt really bad and I could barely put pressure on it. It was getting swollen to. However strangely the next day it felt almost completely fine. I could still feel the pain but my range of motion was much better and I could walk again. Today feels much better than yesterday as well. I could do light jogs but I'm really scared to move laterally quickly. I guess I healed fast or maybe my injury wasn't severe. How long should I wait to train do you guys think?

Same thing happened to me about a month and a half ago.. I was limping a lil bit during class but not too bad.. the next day waking up it was stiff n painful.. it hurts when i twist my knee, and i heard that pop as well. No swelling of any kind, just felt the pain.. it has improved since then, I can walk fine now n actually start jogging.. I was able to start walking without limping about 3-4 weeks after.

Getting my mri this friday just to make sure all is ok, i'm hoping. Been staying away from class since then, hoping to get back after fri! Good luck and i'd recommend to give it some rest until the pain has gone away completely.. and visit an orthopedic doctor if you haven't.

On a sidenote, does it feel stiff when you straighten out your leg all the way? Mine was fine until my leg is almost straight..

Yea I can feel a little pain on the outside of my knee when I straighten it all the way out. I can walk fine after like 3-4 days but I can still feel the tender and weakness in the knee. I don't know what the popping was from.
