Pettis certainly wasn't a top 5 lightweight when they fought last year. Losing to Barboza extended his losing streak to 3 and made Pettis realize that he was firmly outside the top 5 to the point that he dropped to featherweight afterward.

Barboza followed that up by extending Gilbert Melendez's losing streak to 3, also prompting him to drop to featherweight. At the time of his fight with Barboza, Gilbert hadn't beaten anyone not named Diego Sanchez in over 4 years. Clearly not top 5.

Meanwhile, Barboza lost to Tony Ferguson at the end of 2015, Michael Johnson earlier in 2015, and Donald Cerrone in 2014.

As you can see, he loses every time he faces a top 5 lightweight and beats everyone outside the top 5. That is the definition of a gatekeeper.
