So Im on week 5 of the bill starr 5x5. Im getting amazing results. My max 5 for everything has doubled in 5 weeks. My bench and my squat always end up going up the same day and at the same rate, so I am benching as much as I can squat. Is that normal? Is my squat eventually going to catch fire and grow faster? Im assuming its just a noob thing but I wanted to get your opinions.

Most of the time its not my legs that struggle on a squat, but my lower back, so Im assuming once that all builds up my legs will take over the work and it will raise higher.

Occasionally people will have a higher bench than squat. This is mostly due to experience. Were you a bench monkey previously ? If so, then yes. Have some patience. Your squat will rise above your bench.

No, Ive never done anything before really. The only other time I have ever lifted was about 2 years ago when I did the same program and had the same type of results.

This could be a form issue. I'll let someone else take over. I don't have much knowledge.

I'm guessing one will plateau (the bench) real soon... or you could be doing a lot more weight with squats. People have a natural fear of squats and are unsure of how much they can handle, but with proper form they can overcome it.

My friend had the same issue as you before I brought over a gym buddy that showed him how to do a squat right and know when he was at his true max. I'm not that well versed, just saying that you're not alone.

Keep lifting, check your technique, and it will sort itself out eventually. Unfortunately, probably with bench progress slowing down.

Yes it will, without question. I highly recommend you post a form check video here. If you are feeling it a lot in your lower back, that could be a sign of an issue with your form (e.g. your hips are rising faster than your chest).

Noob thing.

Repping my Squats at 290

Repping my Bench at 225

My Bench and Squat use to be equal... before I started doing squats.

Right now mine are close. Bench is slowing down though. Squat is increasing steadily.

Quick update. My bench is now 5 sets of reps at 185 lbs, and my squat has shot up to 5 sets of 5 reps at 200.

Mine are about the same after 3 months of Bill Star and now 3 months of 531. I never really squatted before that but I had been benching (with really bad form and bad results) for a long time. Both lifts are steadily increasing but they are staying around the same and lagging way behind my deadlift
