My affair with the intellectual dark web by Meghan Daum

Anyway cheers, always a pleasure!

Likewise buddy. I don't think we're ever going to come to a resolution as far as Islam is concerned, but it's worth giving it a shot. Over and over and over again. Lol.

Apologies for the derail all.

Also, isn't the dark web like shit that is beneath the surface or somehow hidden? All of these dudes host their videos on YouTube.

Yeah, don't you need some tor browser or some shit? lmao, at this stupid bitch.

I don't even know what that is, haha. I just know I had to read a little about that stuff in my past work, and I didn't understand a thing. From what I've ever heard, the dark web is just perverts and contract killers.

We are on the surface web. The deep web is where most internet activity takes place.

I know exactly what they are. Inexcusable. But now we see a pushback were Native kids are taken out of foster homes and settled on reserves against their will so they can be in touch with their heritage. And the host of problems that come with life on the rez. Trying to fix one wrongdoing with another never works.

Other than that I can't speak of the 1st Nations experience as while I'm familiar with many on a personal level I'm just an outsider looking in. Immigration on the other hand I'm well versed in.

Newcomers have an option that conquered indigenous folks never had - don't like the system? Don't go there. I think it's an apples to oranges comparison.
I think we're talking past each other slightly. Kafir asked about outside immigrant groups changing cultural fabric, which I saw and thought a decent segue into thinking about how American/Native education history is a fascinating- and quite recent- example of exactly that. And not as a course of gradual cultural shift through migration, but rather deliberate government policy.
I didn't mean to derail the thread or your conversation. More than happy to discuss that elsewhere.

It's all good. Kafir and I were in full blown derail mode already. I can see how your point is relevant, but perhaps more so when talking about Denmark (i think) where the government is doing just such a thing with mandatory integration courses starting at age 1. As far as Native issues go that's a topic I'm biased on as I think NA indigenous folk are on the receiving end of one of the biggest screw jobs in history.

The phrase " intellectual dark web " is the most pretentious goofy narssistic shit.

m25105 I think you have an incorrect take on Harris and Islam. He does want to promote and give a bigger voice to progressive Muslims. He often points out that progressive Muslims are the biggest victims of extremists. While I think he would prefer Muslims to leave the religion completely, he knows that isn't going to happen so he hopes that a progressive Islam does spread. He knows he isn't going to be able to change anything and knows that things have to change from within.

He didn't have much of an opinion leading up to the Iraq war. He understands that bombing people in Iraq would make people hate the US.

He doesn't want to make Islam illegal or randomly bomb Muslims.

He is against things in Islam that are inconsistent with liberal democracy. And he will say x percent of Muslims believe people should be punished for blasphemy. Then he is speaking to that x percent who think blasphemy should be punished. He doesn't have a problem or supports Muslims who think blasphemy shouldn't be a crime.

Harris would say we cannot have blasphemy laws in a liberal society because free speech is a pillar of a liberal democracy. Same thing with equality of opportunity for women and fair treatment of gays. And people should be able to leave the religion without any consequence since people should have freedom of conscience.

Ultimately he hopes all religions will be taken as seriously as astrology.

I don't know. I don't follow him. But every critique I've seen of him didn't exactly paint him as someone that valued Muslim life and his correspondence with Chomsky put a sour taste in my mouth in regards to Harris.

Also @Kafir-kun I edited my place holder post.

To call Rubin and intellectual is, well, odd to say the least.

What does the word intellectual mean and what does it mean in todays age of "If you dont agree with me, no one should ever allow you to speak"?

Intellectual Dark Web means nothing more than being a person who is actually not only willing to speak to someone that disagrees with you, but WANTS that more than anything in order for ideas to grow, get better and to expand your own views due to the possibility of coming across information you did not have before that may, be true.

Oh, and the name was also a joke made by Weinstein because real intellectualism is being driven underground thanks to the far left.

The phrase " intellectual dark web " is the most pretentious goofy narssistic shit.

Eric Weinstein coined it and the NY Times ended up popularizing it with one of their articles.

Weinstein agrees with you that it is goofy and even cringey, and according to him that is part of the intent in the name

He also mentioned here that they aren't 'dark' in the sense that they are underground, as was a criticism of @Trotsky so he makes fun of that as well.

So basically he is agreeing here with the criticisms made by everyone in this thread so far. It's a sort of humored name, and according to him, made that way deliberately.

I guess the humour lies in people using it in a non ironic way, like that lady and the press that ran with it.

Yeah pretty much. According to Weinstein it is a name that is meant to be made fun of, and one that is actually fun to make fun of. Its own little way of marketing itself and propagating, according to him.

Yeah but they all still talk about the same with pride. Don't get me wrong I listen to a bit of Rogan and Harris and even have a little respect for Shapiro, Eric is a sharp dude (his brother is only in the mix because he pissed off the sjw contingent on campus) but using that name in any capacity is goofy.

Whatever it is I know Dave Rubin isn't one.

Unless it is what I said it is, which it is...

Also, the word intellectual means nothing more than a person that engages in "critical thinking, research, and reflection". It has nothing to do with quantity of intelligence or how its used like so many...non-intellectuals think. I say non-intellectuals because a person that uses the word wrong clearly did not RESEARCH it before using it and will never reflect upon that.

Of which Rubin does none.

Yeah it seems like they (Well Eric at least) likes the name and they're going with it. Just that it is tongue in cheek.
