So.. I've never seen Mulholland Drive (2001).

Whenever I read lists that are "top movies since 2000" - this one always seems very high up.

But I can't recall anyone I know or on here ever mentioning it as one of their favorite movies. I want to see it.. but I'm worried this is one of those critic-snob type of thing where critics universally tout it as amazing but it turns out to be meh.

Thoughts?

It's a masterpiece, but it's not for everyone.

It's also definitely not something that is supposed to be seen in the context of 'Get ready for the greatest film of the century', which is a silly label that somehow got slapped on.

Better watched in vibe of 'hey check out this weird movie, it's great'.

There was a Mayberry thread on it not too long ago. Fantastic film, I think everyone should see it, personally. But I’m a big David Lynch fan. Like @Sweater of AV said, he’s very surrealist and dreamlike, and he’s an acquired taste. Lynch isn’t for everyone, but I think that’s what art should be like: wholly unique, like no one could have made that film but Lynch. I have a friend that doesn’t like Lynch because she likes straightforward plots, and all the plot points wrapped up in a pretty bow by the end of the film—Lynch isn’t that.

I watched it once or twice a while back nothing sticks out about it to me now that I can remember about it aside from being a well made movie that keeps you locked in
It's worth a watch though

Hmm - what movie would you compare this to?

Other David Lynch movies honestly. You might be able to draw some comparison to other melodramatic filmmakers like Douglas Sirk or surrealists like Luis Bunuel to certain degree. But Lynch is Lynch.

Whats the harm in watching it anyway? If you don't like it, then don't watch any more of his movies.

I caught shit here for saying you can't tell someone how to interpret lynch films because they're more art then story.

I like Mulholland drive but I agree wild at heart and blue velvet are better. I am a big fan of lynch movies.
It's been years since I watched it, so I will give it another try and report back, lol. It's a worthy cause.

Seems like a sensible take to me. I do think most have a plot—like, Mulholland Drive clearly has a plot. But what exactly is happening and what it means and what’s real and what’s symbolic is very much up to the viewer.

the availability(legal) of lynch movies is spotty I've been dying to watch lost highway in particular lately. I'll probably get into a rewatch of twin peaks this fall too

I absolutely love everything that David Lynch does. His movies are like a vacation in that they take you somewhere that you have never been. By somewhere it can mean anything. Not necessarily a place but psychologically or emotionally. If you have an open mind then you'll love all of David Lynch's work.

I 100% agree. I think sometimes lynch just wanted to put a scenario or subject on screen, or maybe I just didn't see things the way he did.
I can't tell you how much the episode of twin peaks the return "gotta light" spoke to me. I rewatched it instantly. I watch blue velvet probably 2 times a year. This is making me think of committing to fleshing out my small collection of his works

I should do the same. I think Twin Peaks: The Return is the best thing he ever made. I should rewatch it from start to finish.

My second favorite Lynch movie after Lost Highway.
I think MD is about the Hollywood dream and the discovery that there is a reality behind that dream that is ugly and violent, namely the casting couch.
