Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

i have photography as a hobby so i'd love to have my camera with me to document my time training and, of course, the areas i'll be visiting. i will probably be at sinbi for 2-3 weeks and was wondering what you guys thought about having a minimal camera set up (camera+lens, one extra lens, mini tripod) with me. is there a safe place to keep your belongings in at the gym?

Just leave it in public view so you can see it. No one will take it.

I've got a friend who's fought professionally in the states as a kickboxer and an mma fighter. He's also taught crossfit for a few years.

Recently he's been talking about moving to Thailand to trainand teach Jits, wrestling, mma or xfit at a muay Thai camp.

Does anyone who's been over there have any insight to share on this idea?

He'd probably want to stick with a Muay Thai gym that caters to Westerners, as most "hardcore" MT gyms probably won't have much interest in his services.

As for Crossfit, another potential market to tap is some of the new upscale gyms that cater to Bangkok hi-so folks (like RSM Academy), but that's still a risky prospect as the Crossfit craze never hit Thailand -- at least not yet.

My 2 cents.

Thank you for your 2 cents. He's hoping to work/train at a camp that caters to westerners. Even if it's not xfit directly, he'd be happy running a S&C program or teaching classes in that vein. Ice heard tiger MT has a Jits program as well

With all due respect, why is he sending you here instead of posting himself? Has he had any experience teaching MT? BJJ? What is his fight record? How much is he expecting to be paid? Which gyms has he contacted?

I have seen a few crossfit gyms in Bangkok. There is one right outside the BTS Asoke.

I'm the team manager, he's the head coach and owner of my current gym. I'm trying to help him explore his options. We've been friends for years. He went 8-1 as a professional kickboxer, and 2-2 in professional mma. Purple belt level Jits, though he's mostly a no gi guy. He's hoping to trade teaching for tuition and stay partial owner of his gym to generate a little extra income. He hasn't contacted any gyms yet.

Maximum Gym in Patong offers both MT and Crossfit (well, I don't think that they call it Crossfit for licensing reasons but it sounds the same to me).

I haven't trained there myself and so I can't comment beyond that.

good luck to your friend

Thanks for the input. I looked at that gym a little bit on another website, and it's a good lead

For anyone interested in making the trip to Thailand, Qatar Airways appears to be having a pretty decent sale right now. I was able to find fares in April for under $1,100 roundtrip, with one stop. The cheapest flights on United for the same dates are over $1,500 roundtrip, with two stops.

Qatar is a great airline. The best part is, the flight leaves IAD at 10pm and arrives in BKK at 6:30am. That gives me one extra day. The bad part is, they are no longer part of the star alliance.

Yeah, I wouldn't earn me miles and I won't be able to cash any in for upgrades, but for just under $1,000, it's hard to argue.

Where are you guys off to in April ? I'm also heading over end of march start of April. Also managed to get a deal with emirates for 800$ round trip from Sydney if anybody is interested

I'll likely be in Thailand April 5th-20th. A week in Bangkok at 96 Penang, and then going to Ubon to check out some grassroots gyms.

Hey guys,
I want to visit Thailand next summer for at least one month to train muay thai there. I don't want to go Tiger Muay Thai or a similar gym like that but to a gym which offers serious training with not too many farangs and classes with 40+ people. It shouldn't cost more than 10.000 Baht and the accomodation should be affordable as well. Any toughts on Sinbi, Jun, Sityodtong or Jitti? Other suggestions?

Thank you!

Sinbi is awesome, but it's exactly what you don't want. I would pick a smaller gym with less people. If you want a place with cheaper accommodation, you might want to look into camps in Chiang mai, koh phangan, and Pai.

I may have asked this before -- maybe even in this thread -- but I don't remember the answer. Why are so many people so dead set against training with other farangs? I can certainly understand why more experienced fighters and people who have trained in Thailand many times may want to get out of that environment (especially those who understand and speak some Thai), but I've personally seen people who are admittedly new to muay Thai saying that, on their very first trip abroad, do not want to train with other farang. Not saying that this is Luaks's situation as he didn't mention, but I've seen it more than once.

I think that there are quite a few benefits to training in a gym that caters to farang when you're new to the art and the country. But everyone needs to feel special, I guess.
