Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

hi, i live in bangkok on a permanent basis
i am a total noob, no martial arts experience, but i have discipline
i want to do MT for self-defense/exercise. i dont want to fight for a gym, but i want to learn properly (not some bullshit kickboxing-aerobics)
i would like to train 2-3x a week, preferably in the evenings (the later the better for me)
i speak thai
money is no object (i could pay for private sessions or whatever)

what should i do?

If you are in BKK then head over to National Stadium and the Muay Thai Conservation Center, Gate 17 I think. Although they have fighters train there they are not a fight gym. Thai's do not pay to train there and the costs for farang are reasonable. They have some really good teachers.

Little off topic guys but put the word out!! -- the best stand up fighter on the gracie team is a recent addition to gracie baja in hendersonville n.c...his name is justin thomas thrift, the brazilians call him "meio kilo" and he's trying to get a fight with mazikaki or dominik cruz..he says they are the only guys in the division that will stand with him!!

Sorry if this is a small derailment. Didn't want to start an entire thread for it.

Does anybody know how much it costs to buy a small mini fridge in Thailand?

Great advice! Suphan is a very skilled trainer.

ill be going to thailand next year for roughly 6 months. does anyone have an opinion of which camp to go to? i see a lot of people go to a camp for a few weeks or a month, but does anything change if i were to go for a longer period of time?

hey guys, anyone got some good recommendations for gyms that have private one on one classes? I tend to find one on one classes a lot better and more value for money then group classes.. really want to work on my clinch game in thailand and i think doing a lot of private clinch classes would help, anyone got some tips?

Patong Boxing Gym. Fight Passport gave it a pretty good review a couple years ago. I plan on checking them out for a couple of days.

Also, does anybody have any recommendations for gyms near the Khao San Road area? I'll be there this weekend with some friends and I'd like to get some training in on Saturday (and Sunday if they're open).

Thanks!

I trained at PBG from Nov - Jan. You are assigned a trainer and everything is one on one. Personally, I really liked it. Not only did my technique really improve, my trainer really understood how I was feeling/progressing and just altered my training accordingly. I think he had a better idea then I did when I needed a little break versus pushing through.

The only complaint I really heard is that some people liked a more communal spirit for when they were doing bag work. Working on your own for that is different from being in a group where everyone is doing 200 knees, x kicks, etc.

Like every camp, it all comes down to how you like the trainers. I had a great time there and I hope you do too.

One tip -pretty much everyone runs along the road down to the outskirts of Patong and back. Great hill training but you are basically running on the side of a busy road. If you want something different, I often ran on Karon beach. If you take a shortcut down to the beach, it is only 5 minutes from the gym. Then you can run along the perfect beach rather then smell exhaust for 30 minutes.

Awesome! Glad you had a good experience there and I really appreciate the running tip. This is a very touristy trip (going w/ friends) but I'm hoping to get as much good training in as I can.

Hey guys, am going to Phuket for 5 days from the 7th of June. Was thinking of checking out a couple of places. Tiger Muaythai and PBG. Anybody have any must try tips for gyms or any other stuff? Also is there anywhere on phuket I can get cheap shopping, clothes and gear as well. Thanks.

Thought I would put up my review on a gym that I trained at in Thailand.

Tiger Muay Thai.

Muay Thai, MMA & Thai Boxing training Camp Phuket Thailand - Welcome to Tiger Muay Thai

My situation ..
Was wanting a training trip over there with some good time spent on learning technique and developing me skills that I already had (I have much room for improvement lol ). However, going over to spend a month there, I also wanted a quick 5 days on the drink, and partying before I started my training, which is why I ended up in Phuket.

For gear Phuket Fight Shop is the go to place. I think gear in Phuket costs slightly more than in Bangkok but at PFS you won't be paying the added convenience charge that TMT bump up their prices with.

PFS is on a little off-shoot on the same road as TMT and Phuket Top Team. In fact, it's owned by Boyd of PTT.

Kombat Fight Lab in Rawai is alright price wise also. But over all, prices in Phuket suck.

RD speaks the truth, prices aren't good in Phuket.

If you are not booking your flights with the same company/in one go, you can consider stopping for the day in Bangkok and buying what you need there before leaving for Phuket.

Likewise, on the way home, stop at Bangkok and pick up any bulky items you'd like to buy; pads, bags etc.

Hello,

I am going to Thailand for 6 months to focus on my training. I got some experience in all aspects of mma (Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu). I want to improve my stand-up game while not losing my other assets while I am there.

Also, I am not rich so I'd like to have a good price/quality ratio. From what I read I should stay in Bangkok and stay away from Phuket?

Basically, MMA, not partying, good training, cheap.

Any information is really appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I apologize for this post because its me being lazy. I'm looking for a camp thats a little far from anything really.. but still has internet access.

There's a Team Quest facility that opened up in chiang mai. Ive heard good things about it. and chiang mai is way cheap compared to bkk and phuket.

i was over on another forum and saw that Matt Lindland was heading up there this month. This is the link that was posted.

might be worth checking out.

I was looking at a place in Phuket Province on the internet called Suwit Muay Thai Camp, seems pretty reasonable cost at at 11000bht a month inc own room or 9000bht training only.
Has anyone been there or got any information other than their own publicity.

no prob. for me, MT is about having fun. so I hope you enjoy Thailand and get in whatever training you can.

Good luck whichever gym you end up going to

I appreciate everyone giving their opinions on where to buy gear and where to get the best prices.

My personal observation from looking at gear in BKK, Pattaya, and Phuket is that the price differences just are not that great. In the end, you are talking about saving $10 here and $5 there. So, personally, I would recommend that people just use the great advice given elsewhere and go to whatever shop is closest. Unless you are planning on equipping a gym back home, any savings are likely to be immaterial compared to the overall cost of your trip to Thailand.

But maybe I am not cost sensitive enough.

And no disrespect intended to those who have offered places to save some $

Hi All,

This is my first post here, I've read most of the threads, made some research and have a few questions.

I am 34 years old, Indian with some martial arts background (TKD & Tang Soo Do) during my school n college years, currently out of shape(overweight by 10-12 kgs) n poor stamina(by Muay Thai standards)

I am going to Bkk from mid Aug to mid Sep for a 1 month training camp. I am hoping to gain some cardio n get to better shape in next 2 months. I already have started running/kick heavy bag 1 hr a day 5-6 days a week. Planning to make it 2 sessions of 1 hr each morning n evening for the next 2 months.

I would like to know what are the best gyms that are away from the tourist spots that focus on good technique and patient with beginners. Only gym I have in mind is Sitmonchai, like the family atmosphere many reviewers talk about and great stable of fighters.

Its not that I am going to become a pro, I really do want to fight some amateur fights in the coming years.

Only few positives on my side is I have time(work in the Middle East) to put in every day, my flexibility & speed is good & used to take a hit in the face(& get knocked out at times) during my younger days.Few strengths during good old days - Counter attack& timing, high kicks.

For fear of getting tagged with TMT type fitness camps 'cos of my age & shape, no I don't want those, I am keen on old school Muay Thai that's traditional & personal.

Please advice on options other than Sitmonchai. Thank you all. I almost fell for TMT until I found this forum n gained a lot of insight on camps thanks to you guys.

P.S: Nothing against TMT, a few of my friends have been there and loved it, its only my goals are different from theirs.
