Yes, this is what happens when you don't understand economics which both Bernie and his wife do not.
Luckily Bernie will not be president and ruin our country with stupid ass economic shit like wife did

Cliffs: mrs sanders was president of burlington college and took out a huge ass loan to buy land and most likely lied about donations she was receiving and may have commited bank fraud.

http://www.dailywire.com/news/5767/burlington-college-closes-because-crushing-weight-hank-berrien

On Monday, Burlington College in Vermont announced it would close May 27 because of “the crushing weight of the debt” Bernie Sanders’ wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, who served as the president of Burlington College, incurred when she took out $10 million in loans on behalf of the college which it couldn’t repay. Don’t worry about Jane Sanders, though, she received a $200,000 severance package merely one year after she paved the path for the college’s ruin.
Ms. Sanders took out the loans in 2010 to buy 32 acres of land from the Roman Catholic diocese, which sold the land for funds to pay off a $17 million sexual-abuse settlement. But as Heat Street has reported, the fundraising pledges and commitments Ms. Sanders offered in the loan agreements never came to pass. As Heat Street stated, “By 2014, because of its shaky finances and running deficits, Burlington College found itself placed on probation for two years by the regional accreditation agency”
The college’s Monday news release said the debts from the loans were “insurmountable at this time … We anticipate notice from [the regional accreditation agency] that we have not met the Commission’s financial standard and, therefore, our accreditation will be lifted as of January 2017, and the College will not be able to award academic credit after this time.”
Catholic parishioners in Vermont want an investigation Ms. Sanders actions, suspecting she committed federal bank fraud by deliberately misrepresenting the amount of fundraising pledges she claimed would help the college pay back the loans. She insisted over and over that the college had obtained over $2 million in fundraising commitments and pledges. Brady Toensing, the vice chair of the Vermont Republican Party, acted as attorney for Catholic parishioners and contacted the U.S. attorney in Vermont and the inspector general of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, urging them to launch an investigation. If Ms. Sanders defrauded the bank, she could serve 30 years in prison and pay $1 million in fines.
In January, when the parishioners launched action, the Sanders campaign snapped, "This recycled, discredited garbage is the handiwork of Brady Toensing, the Vice Chairman of the Vermont Republican Party. These kinds of attacks on family members of candidates are one of the reasons why the American people are so disgusted with politics in America today.” Toensing responded simply, "My complaint is driven from facts -- driven from facts derived from a public record.”
By fiscal year 2011, only $279,000 of the pledges had been garnered, despite the fact that the college claimed it had obtained $1.2 million in confirmed pledges.

I'm confused, what do catholic parishoners have to do with the purchase

Wow this is legit its all over the news.

She did lie and her actions and stupidity led to a college collapsing (closing). Such a shame

It looks like she made a bad financial decision, by overestimating growth in enrollment and donations. That's not good.

Of course, this is the candidate's spouse, not the candidate themself. Imagine how much worse it would be if a candidate for President had an embarrassing financial track record.

Sort of like when Carly Fiorina bombed as the head of HP.
Or when Bush Jr ran everything he touched into the ground.
Or when Trump had to declare bankruptcy and stiff his creditors FOUR TIMES.

That sort of thing is really, really bad.

Being the consistent, totally not a giant hypocrite, totally not a partisan hack kind of guy you are, you probably didn't and don't support any of those 3 and think everybody should absolutely not vote/have voted for any of them for President, right Skip?

LOL brutal.

Saw this earlier.... what's troubling is that she justified the land purchase by saying that she left the school with a plan to pay for it based on enrollment growth. Great assumption there - basically a make or break move for the school with a poor risk reward profile.

So she tanked a college after taking out loans to buy land from an organization that was desperate for cash to pay off a bunch of people whom their members sexually molested.

Lol da fuq

Her mistakes should be forgiven. The evil capitalist society is at fault here. Burlington College should be free! The government should pay Mrs. Bernie's high salary, not the students. The evil rich people can afford it.

she probably had no idea the loans had to be paid back. money is free, right?

Did they commit bank fraud?
"suspecting she committed federal bank fraud by deliberately misrepresenting the amount of fundraising pledges she claimed would help the college pay back the loans"

Did HP go out of business?
Is Carly Fiorina running for president?
Did trump single handedly close down a fucking college??? Like 80% of businesses fail. How many colleges fail due to some colossal fuckup and potential fraud like this?

You do want to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges, right? I mean, you don't want to be an idiot, right?

But hey, none of this matters as the doctor dropped you from over a height of 3 feet and Bernie stands no chance at getting the dem nomination

amirite?

she probably had no idea the loans had to be paid back. money is free, right?

she was probably just going to increase the VT taxes to pay for it

She bought the land from the Catholic Church, who needed to raise money to pay their molestation victims.

trump did worse - he opened up a fake school and defrauded people out of tuition money.

i don't know anything about bernie's wife, and quite frankly you don't have the credibility to take anything you say as truth or even close to a fact. but i know myself, with utter certainty, to dismiss trump university as anything but a scam is just being an obtuse partisan asshole.

in fact, everything trump does is either fraudulent or a scam. he's scamming the entire republican party. and people like you are so stupid and focused on trivial bullshit that you just take a guy like that at his word. which isn't surprising, you are the same group of people that give millions every year to televangelists who use that money to buy themselves yachts and private planes and trips to thailand to fuck children.

bernie's wife is also bernie's wife. i'm not overly concerned with something the first lady will do. i've already expressed concern though about bernie's policies and how much they'll cost, which has been a legit issue since the start of his campaign.

truthfully, this is just a shitty thread similar to trump and cruz going at it with each other's wives. it's WWE level tabloid bullshit, and i feel dirty even posting in this thread now in retrospect. but i typed this shit up so i'm gonna post it, so fuck you.

A little insight from someone who lives in Burlington. Burlington College was never more than an afterthought of a school. They had a film/arts program, beyond that I couldn't really tell you one major they offered. Before they bought that building they were in a single ratty building that you wouldn't have guessed was a college if it didn't have a sign. There was no reasonable way they could have expected to grow given that in a town of less than 100k we have: The University of Vermont, Champlain College(tech and business focused), and the Community College of VT. The first is a "major(for the area)" uni, the second is a real and respected college, and CCV is a solid and locally respected community college. BC had no place in the market.

Skip, I have to tell you, that the way you still seem concerned with Bernie, makes me think I really am right in thinking he is going to end up with the nomination, as Clinton's poll numbers tank.

I had really wondered how a college could default on buying 32 acres.

Well our country does have 3rd world elements to it. There are parts of America that appear like third world ghettos.

What does that matter?

Bernie's wife still messed up really badly and needs to go back to school.

Of course that does not mean that Bernie himself is this foolish. This shouldn't affect peoples judgement of Bernie but it will much the same way that Hillary's image was affected by Bill's behavior. What will be interesting to see is if the far left will treat this as a blow to Bernie Sanders image, like they would treat this as a blow to Hillary's image (or any leading 'establishment' candidate if the roles were reversed.

And what I mean by that is simply.

If Hillary or if any other leading 'Establishment Democrat' had the same scenario go down you'd hear these hardcore far left liberals using this instance as an example of how candidate XYZ is unqualified because of something idiotic that their spouse did.

I am not a finance guy, What was the local thought on the whole thing?
