According to Variety:

TriStar Pictures has landed worldwide distribution rights to the Mr. Rogers biopic “You Are My Friend,” with Tom Hanks attached to play the iconic TV personality.

“Diary of a Teenage Girl” director Marielle Heller is helming the pic from a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

“I’m thrilled to be making ‘You Are My Friend,'” Heller said. “The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

The film is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. In the story, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed.

“This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite. We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world,” said Hannah Minghella, president of TriStar Pictures.

I heard Mister Rogers was a sniper in the Marines with over 150 kills in Vietnam. Not sure if it's been debunked or not, but if true, I would love to see this included in the movie.

According to Wikipedia, this is just a rumor.

Rogers was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, 40 miles (65 km) southeast of Pittsburgh, to James and Nancy Rogers; he had one sister, Elaine. Early in life, he spent much of his free time with his maternal grandfather, Fred McFeely, who had an interest in music. He would often sing along as his mother would play the piano, and he himself began playing at five.

Rogers graduated from Latrobe High School (1946). He studied at Dartmouth College (1946–48), then transferred to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, where he earned a B.A. in Music Composition in 1951. Rogers was also a trained general aviation pilot.

At Rollins, he met Sara Joanne Byrd (born c. 1928), an Oakland, Florida, native; they married on June 9, 1952. They had two sons, James (b. 1959) and John (b. 1961). In 1963, Rogers graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and was ordained a minister in the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.

Rogers had an apartment in New York City and a summer home on Nantucket island in Massachusetts. Rogers was red–green color blind, swam every morning, and neither smoked nor drank. He was a vegetarian on ethical grounds, stating "I don't want to eat anything that has a mother." Despite recurring rumors, he never served in the military.

His office at WQED Pittsburgh famously did not have a desk, only a sofa and armchairs, because Rogers thought a desk was "too much of a barrier".

Too bad. Would be awesome if true.

Hoping they add some cgi scenes, explosions etc to attract a larger audience.

100% sure before this is released he will be accused of :eek::eek::eek: shit and the whole project gets canned.

Ugh Tom Hanks? Dude couldn't pull of Santa Clause, how is he going to play Mr. fucking Rogers? This is bittersweet, Mr. Rogers is a saint who deserves more recognition, but Hanks is such lazy casting for this type of stuff, he gives Will Smith a run for his money as the most overrated actor in Hollywoo.

Should've cast Eddie Murphy:

Sounds like the most tame and boring biopic second only to Bob Ross

Apparently he was one of the few "good guys" in hollywood. His speech recognizing his contributions to day time television left a room full of actors and A-listers in tears:

Peter Dinklage should play the postman.

Mr Rogers is actually a great person. Check out the speech he laid on the senate committee back in the early 80s.

Mr. Rogers is why I thought sweaters were cool at age 5.

Fred Rogers, American Icon
I'd rather watch the corpse of Robin Williams portray him than Hanks
