Mr. Finland wha happan!?

People got too excited over his UFC debut. I've made several posts here (as a Finn) that he's going to lose as soon as he fights a top 15 opponent. Turned out he lost sooner than that. He's a good wrestler at least in the context of European MMA fighters but I was never too impressed by his performances pre UFC.

He's also more interested in milking his celebrity status in Finland rather than being the best fighter he can be. For example he didn't want to go to SBG for a proper training camp because he doesn't want to be separated from his family (no wife or kids mind you). I also never really wanted to root for him because you hear a some nasty rumours about him around martial arts gyms in Finland although I don't think he's that person anymore.

He needs to learn gnp. He had opportiunities to land some gnp but dude just doesn't have it in his arsenal. Also he gives up positions too easily.

Why is he Mr. Finland anyway, I'm pretty sure I saw it on the stream that was born in Tajikistan or something.
John McCain was born in Panama. Why is he claiming to be an American hero? He's a Panamanian hero.

What nationality were McCain's parents? Muricans could give birth while traveling abroad, working abroad or serving abroad, that doesn't mean anything.

Are Makwan's parents Fins or are they from somewhere else?

The better question would be what language does he speak best.

He went all out on two subs and it slowed him down.

If the ref didn't stand them up he would have won that fight. Shit call by the ref.

WTF :D He was losing the fight even without the standup. One judge scored it 30-27. The first round was the only one he could have barely won. He also didn't go all out with the subs like you see in some fights where fighter holds the sub like 3 minutes. The sub attempts were over pretty quickly and he still gassed bad.

When the referee stood them up Makwan was taking a breather like he did in the second round when Allen made the choke attempt/mistake.

He ran into a hungrier fighter who could match him all the way. I thought Makwan would win a close decision but did say Allen winning wouldn't surprise me. He's well-rounded for a youngster and physically strong, if he keeps making improvements he could be a decent contender.

I see Makwan's 'Mr Finland' shtick as being quite provocative (I can't think of a better word) - almost like "I'm not even Finnish but look at me, I'm the best man in your entire country, your women can't get enough of me etc etc"

Dude's a massive poser.

This was exactly what I said. Allen never settled for bad positions while Makwan did, and Allen was so much busier on the feet. Hustle Young Allen Hustle.
also huge size difference between the two, helped allen.
thought it was a very good fight, both top prospects and could be big in the future.

Makwan promised Ariel he would finish Allen in the first minute of the first round. He blew his wad quickly trying it. Makwan spent too much time doing commercials and reality tv instead of training. The fame he has in Finland has already gone to his head (fame brought to him by fighting, now he thinks he can keep the fame without even fighting). His fight IQ is horrible. He needs to go back to training, listen to his coaches, work on his cardio and humble down. I was always scared this would happen. A talented idiot.

This thread is full of whiny bitches.

"Shit son, a former refugee (or child of refugees, I wont bother looking it up) who is now successful and banging 10's all week - WE CANT HAVE THAT!"

American beta squad out in full force. By this point I'd actually rejoice if the infowarrior-delusion came true and the WASP-demographic got fucked out of existence. Lately they've produced nothing but whiny losers.

His heart is not in fighting. He is making money from other endeavors.

Or maybe he just wasn't good enough that night..... I mean for someone who is not into fighting, he sure talks a lot.

Moving to SBG was a bad move because the only good fighters (Conor and Gunni) are rarely there.

Gunni trains mostly in Iceland.

Conor doesn't train or help his teammates between camps. Mawkan says Conor was 'busy' and he only saw him once or twice in the gym. Busy doing what? He's got nothing to do for 9 months and should have lots of free time to give back to the guys who helped him.

The way he answers this question defensively and says "it didn't matter to me who was there" (which the guy didn't even ask) suggests it is definitely a sore spot. He also makes a remark about his training partners being always on time which seems to be a reference to Conor's unreliability and strange hours.

Would be cooler if he was "Mr.Sweden"

He spent most of his training camp on a local boxing gym in Lahti, Finland. I don't think Makwan has even trained more than a month in total at SBG (all previous trips combined).

Spot on, Lahden Kaleva for boxing and Lahden Gentai for MMA specifically.

Although I'm not an athlete myself, I find it difficult to imagine that there would be any real gains to be had by scattering your training all over the place. If you're going to train exclusively in Finland, then delegating different areas of MMA for different specialist coaches is obviously somewhat of a necessity, but when you have the option of committing to a place that has sufficient knowledge in all the areas of MMA under one roof, it seems to me like a far superior option.

Also, in my mind, continuity is a key factor in effective skill retention and evolvement. A personal MMA coach like Kavanagh should work best when he can assess your development on a daily basis and adjust the training methods for carefully thought out purposes over time. There's also something to be said about developing an interpersonal synergy between the coach and the individual athlete and how it makes everything more efficient learning wise when you have a mutual understanding between eachother.

Didn't see much Amirkhani hype after the Wilkinson fight. I thought he did really well against Allen, though.
