The lead up:
Conor is training for what appears to a huge mismatch fight against RDA. Everything is going great, he's confident, his camp has gone well and he's happy with the weight he has put on.
Nate Diaz is laying on a friend's couch in cabo. The past few nights of partying combined with mexico's drinking water has gotten the better of him. His stomach has been upset for a few days and has been eating little. But by evening he is feeling well enough to be taking shots again.
Then everything begins to happen, RDA has broken his foot while sparring with a top level muy thai guy and the UFC and conor are looking for a sellable fill in.
Nate Diaz is called. He agrees to take the fight at 155 since his recent illness has actually kept his weight down. Dana waffles, doesn't like the amount Diaz is asking for and says he will call back. Diaz speaks with people from his team including his brother and by the time Dana calls back, Diaz is asking for a million to show up at 155, but will take a little less if he doesn't have to cut weight with the short notice. 500k for a fight @170lbs is agreed upon.
PRESS TIME:
Conor has clever phrases for Nate Diaz who seems genuinely unphased by it all. Nate continues to repeat that Conor's team sucks and that Conor is on da' roids. While lacking in substance, Conor can't help but react.
By the time they get to square off, Conor is clearly "gotten to," and does the goofy punch at Diaz's hand.
At the weigh in however, it's clear Nate is still is not taking Conor seriously. A slight feint causes Conor to flinch, Diaz has the last laugh before the fight begins.
Fight Plans:
Diaz is concerned about his sharpness and ability to pressure for 5 rounds with no camp and no sparring as he puts it "straight fat boy off the beach in cabo." His way of dealing with the insecurity of that is take the first round off and turn the pressure up as he went. He's not worried about his ability to take damage, thats the one thing that not being in fight shape does not effect as long as he can keep his cardio up.
Conor believes Nate can't take his punishment. He's repeated over and over that Nate is too predictable, and that he will land his big shot. Nate will crumble before him like a "lion eating a gazelle."
ROUND 1, LETS GO!
Conor to his credit, does stalk Diaz as the aggressor. Nate wins the opening exhange with a half effort jab after leaning out of the way of a few Conor bombs.
Conor is relentless however and begins to set up diaz using his speed, landing 2 heavy shots while nate tries to answer conor's leg kicks. Nate falls for this twice. The exchange comes to an end when Conor misses by a mile using a backwards spinning kick he recently showed to Conan O'brien, and is clenched against the fence by nate. Nate gets the better of the clinch before Connor breaks free.
The irishman spends the next minute aggressively pursuing Diaz, but misses nearly every thing he throws. Stockton's own continues to fight on his back foot, moving away and catches conor with a few 1-2's at range when Conor over commits. He continues to get the better of the exchanges off his back foot, until 1:30 when a counter from conor opens up a large cut above Diaz's eye.
They spend the next 40 seconds roughly even in their exchanges, with the bloody Diaz repeatedly landing Jabs while Conor appears to land the heavier shots.
Nate Catches a half hearted kick from Conor and drags him to the ground. With only 30 seconds left in the round, Diaz uses every second of dominant position to slap Mcgregor 3 times. When Mcgregor takes dominant position he is able to do nothing with it. As the round draws to a close Diaz wiggles himself to north south and the bell rings.
Rd 1 Metrics and scoring.
They've both landed 37% of their strikes, Diaz has landed more punches while McGregor has landed more kicks. Despite taking the round off, Diaz has kept the round nearly even, at 23 strikes to Mcgregor's 28, and
finished the round with a TD and 3 strikes(slaps) landed while on the ground. The Round could be either man's, but due to Nate's cut the judges without doubt will reward the more aggressive and heavier striking Conor.
ROUND 2, WELCOME TO STOCKTON MOTHERFUCKER
Things start to get interesting, Conor is still trying to win the fight on sheer confidence. He sets up a flashy kick by juking one way then spinning the other. It lands lightly to the body. He follows nate, still clearly the aggressor in the fight.
In the next exchange Conor misses way short on his 1,2 and is paid for his effort by a stockton slap that can be heard above the restless crowd.
Now the scrap begins. Conor keeps throwing spinning kicks but coming up empty. Nate continues to fight from the outside, landing long 1's and 2's at range while Mcgregor has to continually jump in to land. Conor does land, particularly with a hard shot to the body- the only problem is he never gets to land without eating a hard straight from Nate. Nate is keeping his hands high and catching most of Mcgregor's punches on his gloves(later Mcgregor would mention this as a difference in the efficiency of their "use of energy.")
A clinch is initiated by nate who gives a hard knee to the gut before they break. As they break Conor goes on a furious attack, catching nate with a few hits during which nate answers with one of his slapping rights hands.
Conor continues pressing the intensity on his attack and lands a few straights on Diaz's cut causing it to bleed profusely. Diaz's defense however worked well during most of the exchanges, avoiding any additonal damage by covering up while Conor tried to flurry.
Out of this exchange everything changes. As Conor breaks off his attack for a moment to catch a breath, he is shocked that Diaz is now the one walking him down with his hands out and saying "where you goin mother fucker?" Conor is game and tries to return fire as nate presses forward but his punches are clearly not as sharp. He throws another spinning kick out of desperation and misses by miles as Nate is in too close of range. When he turns around Nate slaps him again.
Conor tries to laugh it off, but Nate is in attack mode and clearly rocks Conor with a powerful trigger step jab.
Conor's face is clearly panicked- it's just dawned on him that Diaz is still completely fresh, unhurt and ready to throwdown. Diaz continues landing his long punches while taunting Conor with his hands out.
Conor goes for 1 more big flurry to fend off the pressure- he throws 4-5 hard ones but Diaz covers well catching every single one with a high guard. As soon as Mcgregor stops, Diaz unloads a 1,2 from hell that puts the defenseless Conor on queer street. Wobbling backwards and clearly out of breath, Conor tries to show the punches didn't hurt by putting his hands to the side like Diaz- but he is clearly hurt and eats a few more hard lefts from his opponent.
Conor is now so spent, Diaz nearly knocks him over with a brutal stockton slap. Mcgregor appears to be in a complete panic, now realizing that Diaz has plenty to put him away with since he was nearly put down by a mere slap.
Diaz continues to stalk him, landing hard punches as he lays into Mcgregor sensing the end. They clinch and the beating continues as Nate lands 7-8 uppercuts inside the clinch.
Conor somehow finds the energy to trade again, and goes for a multi punch flurry that lands with little effect. His mouth is widen open inhaling deeply as nate continues to land a few more hard punches. With no chance of handling the pressure, Conor shoots for the TD.
Nate secures a choke and rides MCgregor to the ground. Mcgregor has no choice but to turn, where Nate's ungodly BJJ slides him right into a full mount raining GNP from a full upright position. MCgregor rolls once again to his back as nate maintains position. Nate uses the hand he had stabilizing himself to reach for a choke on Mcgregor.
Conor turns his head away only to catch a full on punch to the face nate started to throw before Conor even started to move away from the choke. The punch shoves his head into the choking arm and Conor taps nearly immediately- completely overwhelmed by what Diaz had left in the tank.
Rogan hands Diaz the Microphone, "I'm not surprised Motherfuckers!"
A masterful performance, the rare occasion where a confident fighter is beaten mentally after being drug into deep water and drowned.
Nate Bless, 209.
