I'm sure we've all got some movies that fall into this category. These are those movies that you saw the trailer and thought, "Hey, that might be awesome!" and then you go see them only to walk out of the theater disappointed. And perhaps not just disappointed, but even a little angry that a cool concept was wasted due to poor execution.
Here are a few of mine. What are some of yours?
1. Now You See Me
I've always liked magic. The way that those guys are able to do shit that defies explanation blows me away. Even though you know it's a trick, at least when it comes to the really good performers, you still can't figure out how it is that they're able to pull it off.
So when I saw the trailer for Now You See Me, I welcomed the movie. Not only did the trailer look cool, but the subject of magic itself is really quite underrepresented in Hollywood. Unfortunately, however, the movie was "Just OK" at best and made a huge mistake in using CGI for the tricks instead of making sure they were all practical and real.
2. Prometheus
Ridley's long-awaited Alien-sequel-that's-not-really-an-Alien-sequel. Beautiful visuals and great performances abound, but the film really falls down on the script level. Take a shot every time a character says or does something that doesn't make sense and you're going to be properly fucked up by the time the credits roll. I really wanted to love this one, but I just couldn't do it. Lots of great individual parts, but they just don't add up to much.
I'll give the movie credit for the surgery scene with Noomi Rapace, though. That's one of the most intense scenes I've ever watched.
3. Cowboys & Aliens
C'mon, with Jon Favreau directing, Steven Spielberg on board as an executive producer, and a good cast that included Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, I was really hoping for something great here. Granted, the concept sounded like it could've come from an Asylum movie, but I figured in the right hands it would be turned into something awesome. Unfortunately, much like with Now You See Me, I walked away feeling like the movie was OK . . . decent . . . watchable . . . but nothing spectacular.
BTW, as an aside, it does look like one of those low-rent studios did rip it off though. I was looking on Netflix the other day and found none other than . . . Cowboys vs Dinosaurs.
I'll go ahead and drop that trailer as a bonus for this thread:
