Movies you hoped would be great but ended up being mediocre

I'm sure we've all got some movies that fall into this category. These are those movies that you saw the trailer and thought, "Hey, that might be awesome!" and then you go see them only to walk out of the theater disappointed. And perhaps not just disappointed, but even a little angry that a cool concept was wasted due to poor execution.

Here are a few of mine. What are some of yours?

1. Now You See Me

I've always liked magic. The way that those guys are able to do shit that defies explanation blows me away. Even though you know it's a trick, at least when it comes to the really good performers, you still can't figure out how it is that they're able to pull it off.

So when I saw the trailer for Now You See Me, I welcomed the movie. Not only did the trailer look cool, but the subject of magic itself is really quite underrepresented in Hollywood. Unfortunately, however, the movie was "Just OK" at best and made a huge mistake in using CGI for the tricks instead of making sure they were all practical and real.

2. Prometheus

Ridley's long-awaited Alien-sequel-that's-not-really-an-Alien-sequel. Beautiful visuals and great performances abound, but the film really falls down on the script level. Take a shot every time a character says or does something that doesn't make sense and you're going to be properly fucked up by the time the credits roll. I really wanted to love this one, but I just couldn't do it. Lots of great individual parts, but they just don't add up to much.

I'll give the movie credit for the surgery scene with Noomi Rapace, though. That's one of the most intense scenes I've ever watched.

3. Cowboys & Aliens

C'mon, with Jon Favreau directing, Steven Spielberg on board as an executive producer, and a good cast that included Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, I was really hoping for something great here. Granted, the concept sounded like it could've come from an Asylum movie, but I figured in the right hands it would be turned into something awesome. Unfortunately, much like with Now You See Me, I walked away feeling like the movie was OK . . . decent . . . watchable . . . but nothing spectacular.

BTW, as an aside, it does look like one of those low-rent studios did rip it off though. I was looking on Netflix the other day and found none other than . . . Cowboys vs Dinosaurs.

I'll go ahead and drop that trailer as a bonus for this thread:

2nd Avengers movie from what I can recall at the moment.

The bad guys are so easy to kill and are never a threat it just gets boring. Same with the opening fight scene where they are fighting randoms in the snow. Yawn out my ass bros

Dark Knight Rises. I was so hyped for it and even after seeing it the first time, I made excuses for it. After a while, I realized what a mess of a movie it was

batman v superman
rush hour 3
godfather 3
the hobbit
the witch
any marvel movie
dark knight rises

Prometheus is a good one. I thought it was decent but was hoping for a lot more.

I heard lots of good things about John Wick before seeing it which is probably why I didn't enjoy it as much as I could've. Good movie but really overrated, in my circle of friends at least.

The latest star wars was pretty disappointing as well.

But probably the movie that I had the highest expectations going in compared to how awful it actually was was the first Saw. I really have no idea why I thought it was gonna be so good either.

Pretty much sums up my experience with Prometheus.

Django Unchained, although i like it much more now than after i first saw it.

Honestly, I felt that way about BOTH Avengers movies. In my opinion, the stand-alone/individual films are all better--in some cases MUCH better--than either of the Avengers movies.

As a matter of fact, I almost put Avengers in the OP.

mad max fury road.

Yeah. I thought it was good, and I give the director a ton of credit for the great (and largely practical) action sequences, but the story was lacking. It's one of those movies that I'm glad I saw once but I'll probably never watch it again.

Definitely The Hobbit.

Godfather III is actually a little underrated, I think. But maybe that's because I first saw it after hearing nothing but negative shit about it.

Interesting choice on The Witch.

The Revenant and Mad Max Fury Road are my two most recent ones, both were stunning visually but left a lot to be desired regarding the actual plot of the movie

I really liked John Wick, but I think it's because I knew exactly what it was when I sat down to watch it: A throwback action movie that does the action REALLY well but that has a thin plot.

As for Star Wars, well, I may get some hate for this but I think the whole series is overrated.

Django Unchained, although i like it much more now than after i first saw it.

Django definitely gets more love than it deserves.

The only reason I'd ever re-watch that movie is for Leo. And maybe SLJ. But mostly Leo.

Sin City 2 was a big, fat, steel-toed kick in the balls

It was on and i decided to give it a second chance, but it was Waltz that i stuck around for.

It's a good movie. I just expect Tarantino to make me geek out with every film.
