MOUSE GUARD (Test Footage Revealed; Cancelled 2 Weeks Before Production Begins)

I don't know anything about the source material but I feel this is like one of my childhood favorite animated movie The Secret of NIMH mixed with Lord of the Rings. I'm in.

This shit is good, bro.

Hopefully the drawing and animation is good, unlike 2018 Watership Down.

Crazy Rich Asians Actress Sonoya Mizuno Lands Title Role in MOUSE GUARD

jN05CMO.jpg

Sonoya Mizuno, who played Araminta Lee, a.k.a the bride, in Warner Bros hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, has been tapped as the title character in 20th Century Fox's Wes Ball-directed Mouse Guard, the film adaptation to David Petersen’s Eisner-winning comic book series. She joins Andy Serkis, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Idris Elba in the film, which will be shot using motion capture.

The story takes place in medieval times and follows a brotherhood of mice sworn to protect the fellow rodents in their midst.

Matt Reeves is producing the film through his 6th & Idaho shingle along with Boom! Studios’ Ross Richie and Stephen Christy, as well as Ball and Wes and his producing partner Joe Hartwick via the OddBall production company banner.

In addition to CRA, Mizuno starred in the Netflix miniseries Maniac and appeared in the indie film All About Nina, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Common. She’ll next be seen as the lead of Alex Garland’s FX miniseries, Devs.

Disney Scraps MOUSE GUARD Two Weeks Before Production Set to Begin

GpCfDwm.jpg

Only two weeks before production was set to begin and with a number of starry castings under its belt, Mouse Guard, Fox's adaptation of the Archaia/Boom! Studios comic, has been halted by Fox's new parent company, Disney.

The move, which went down Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporterconfirmed, happens in the shadow Disney's acquisition of Fox, a deal finalized March 20.

The producers, which include Matt Reeves, Ross Ritchie and Stephen Christy, are being allowed to shop the project to other studios, sources indicated. Several studios are already interested. The project is a ready-to-go, four quadrant franchise starter from Wes Ball, the filmmaker behind the Maze Runner series, which grossed almost a billion dollars. One possible home could be Netflix, where Reeves, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed Planet of the Apes movies, has a production deal. Paramount, whose current motion picture head Wyck Godfrey was a producer on Maze Runner, is another possible contender.

Less clear are the reasons for the sudden red light. One source indicated that the production, which was to use motion capture and heavy digital effects to bring animals to life, veered too close to Disney's homegrown CGI-made fare such as The Lion King and The Jungle Book.

Another source said Disney does not want Fox in the big-budget game, which Mouse Guard, with a budget of $170 million, found itself in. Instead, Disney wants its new studio division to focus on lower-cost family movies, as well as PG-13 and R-rated fare. One of the few exceptions to this will be Avatar, the big-budget sci-fi movies series from James Cameron.

Another insider disputed this idea, saying Fox will not have a budget cap on its projects, saying that in the end, Disney simply balked at the movie itself, believing it too similar to its other fare, and at the film’s high price point.

Based on David Petersen's two-time Eisner winning comics and a graphic novel, Mouse Guard has been described as Game of Thrones for mice. Set in a human-free, medieval world, the comic follows the so-called "Mouse Guard," a group of mice who have sworn to protect their brethren from predators and other threats. WETA was providing the digital effects.

Andy Serkis, Idris Elba, Samson Kayo and Thomas Brodie-Sangster were attached to the project, with Jack Whitehall also circling a role. Motion-capture veteran Serkis was on board to play villain Midnight, a former Guard blacksmith who betrayed the order; Elba was set to take on the role of Celanawe, a former hero who was considered dead but is found; Brodie-Sangster was tapped to play Lieam, a young newbie to the Guard and Kayo was slated for Saxson, a rogue with a difficult temper. Whitehall was in talks for the role of Kenzie, a calm staff-wielder who often partners with Saxson.

That's a shame. Hopefully Paramount or Netflix scoops this up.

So the house of Mouse scraps Mouse Guard....

Never heard of it, anyone care to sum up the plot?

I played the role playing game, I read the book but the game stuck with me because it’s your story. Hopefully somebody makes it work.

So the house of Mouse scraps Mouse Guard....
Yeah I will be charitable in the absence of evidence, but it does from the outside look like exactly the kind of chilling effect you'd expect from a giant family-friendly juggernaut.

weird. I thought it'd be a perfect fit for Disney...

hell they could put Mickey Mouse cameos like how they did it with Stan Lee in MCU if this becomes a successful franchise...

weird...

I think it's pretty decent that the production is being allowed to shop around, rather than Disney just sit on it and never let it see the light of day. Grandfathering in Fox-greenlit can't be easy since it seems all the focus is being put toward Disney+ and streaming media. Hope they don't fuck with AVATAR too much.

Wes Ball Reveals Visually Stunning Test Footage for Scrapped MOUSE GUARD

Director Wes Ball: "The following is a collection of tests that explore the visual potential of a Mouse Guard movie. Everything you see here is rendered in realtime using Epic's UNREAL ENGINE. Basically what you're watching is very good looking previz, with environments capable of streaming live to stage during motion capture with our actors. While the visual quality is impressive, it's important to note this is only meant to illustrate how the movie will 'feel' not how it will 'look'. Everything will ultimately be sent to WETA Digital to be recreated with cutting-age photorealistic CG. This was made from scratch in about 12 weeks with a relatively small team. Credit goes to our team at Halon (led by Casey Pyke) and Fox VFX labs (led by Glenn Derry) Thanks for watching y'all!"

Gorgeous. Another studio should pick this up.

Thats amazing footage and I never heard of the material. Too bad the title said its cancelled

Wow that looks amazing. Probably cost a lot to make. Never heard of the books but it reminds me of these Redwall books I got into as a kid. Our teacher read one of them to us and I started reading the others by myself.
