For me, one of the most underrated aspects of the fights is underestimation of opponent or his particular skill, especially on short notice. This has huuuge effect on the fights outcomes.

Examples:
1. Bigfoot vs DC. Why DC KO'd monster chin Bigfoot and since never KO'd or even rocked anyone in LHW and HW sans Cummings? Because Cormier was unknown prospect and Bigfoot was a star + changing opponent to Bigfoot? so no honest preparation.
2. Tony vs Vannata. Why Lando gave Tony most competitive fight and after it became mediocre fighter. Unknown prospect + short-notice.
3. McGregor vs Diaz 1. Short-notice and Diaz was huuuge underdog, so maybe no honest preparation from Conor.
4. Cruz vs Garbrant. Definetly a factor was that Cody was young prospect and not very studied. Cruz is savant, so....
5. Rockhold vs Bisping 2 - obvious example
6. Maybe, just maybe same thing is with Ngannou today (Overeem and Arlovski wins).

Your thoughts?

Namajunas vs Joanna

Rose has great ability to close distance with big shots. Who knew that would be the death of Joanna.

I remember being there for Rockhold Bisping 2. The entire crowd was in shock. Everyone was just looking around like

<{vega}>

Great moment though. I remember watching the embedded series leading up to to 199, and I couldn’t believe how much Rockhold was already looking past Bisping. You can tell Rockhold had zero respect for Bisping. He kept bringing up Weidman. Rockhold definitely got what he deserved.

Wasnt Francis favourite vs Arlovski and Overeem? I doubt they underestimated him.

It's even funnier because his favorite weapon is a left high kick and Bisping is blind in his right eye.

But Luke wanted to show off his "hands". <28>

Werdum underestimated Miocic

Browne vs Werdum 1

Browne underestimated technicality in Werdum's standup.

WTF was Bigfoot trying to do with Cormier. Grab his cheek and taunt him about his weight?

This one doesn't fit. With all the preparation in the world and a 300k camp, McGregor still only managed to squeeze by Diaz and arguably lose or tie.

I think the gap from being KD'ed and submitted it 2nd round and fighting arguably to the draw is huge.

Your thoughts?

1. Bigfoot could’ve had an endless amount of time, training, preparation, film and juice. None of it would’ve helped. It was a skills/matchup discrepancy. DC’s ability to keep the fight standing and Hand Speed was no match for Bigfoot.

2. Tony has a tendency to fight dumb, get into exchanges where he receives and gives punishment and it makes for an entertaining fight especially against a guy like Lando.

3. Underestimated Diaz and pretty much hand picked him cause he thought he was an easy out. Conor was training to fight RDA though so physically he should’ve been well prepared. But the biggest factor was Diaz skillset matchup well agsinst Conor.

4. How was Garbrandt not well studied? Neck tat boy had 5 fights in the UFC before going into the Cruz fight. Plenty of footage and Cruz is probably obsessive when it comes to studying film on his opponents. Cruz’s best attributes are his footwork, ability to be effectively unorthodox, wrestling and boxing. His wrestling and especially boxing was outclassed big time so the footwork and unorthodox style was not effective. I don’t want to make excuses for Cruz and I don’t think he even mentions it as a factor but the gash he got definitely played a big role in his gameplan/ confidence IMO.

5. Out of the 5 examples this one fits what you bolded the most. Rockhold underestimating and Bisping’s technical boxing style = bad night for Rockhold

Some other big factor are cardio. Short camp Mendes. Another is the guy that was scheduled to fight originally giving his opponent too much respect cause the guy filling in usually has less to lose and can take more risks.

6. Not sure what you’re trying to justify as the reasoning for Ngannou but he is going to sleep Stipe before 1 round.

Lando's Kamikaze style on short notice would've been a lot for anyone at LW (like Gaethje mixed with Conor, all smooth but insane at the same time). Nobody had seen the kid. It's easier to plan for him now when you actually have UFC footage of him. But still - I disagree with calling him mediocre, he's very exceptional. And young. One or two training breakthroughs and he'll be in the TOP 10 (just hope his health holds up).

And Rockhold could've come prepped for D-Day, Bisping was destined to win that fight. I believe this 100%.
Sure. But he fought dead even with FERGUSSON (1st-2nd LW) 1,5 rounds!
