Most serial killers are white men - profiling? Is it OK?

So, it's a fact that a majority of serial killers are white men. When a serial killer is on the loose and the authorities trying to track the individual down, is it OK for the police to narrow the range of potential suspects by profiling the suspect as likely being a white male? Is it OK to profile criminals as white males if it helps save lives?

Well if the population of serial killers mirrors that of racial diversity in the country, then no because race isn't a determining factor. You would be falsely overlooking potential suspects that are equally likely to be the killer.

Also, when there is an actual known serial killer walking free I believe that falls under the scope of the FBI (might be CIA) and they have some of the best profilers in the world for all flavors of criminal.

So, it wouldn't be your local PD creating a profile once the case is being worked. They would be getting direction from another body. While race would be part of the profile, it wouldn't be a plain assumption, every detail of the profile of the research would be based on extensive research.

The stars have always been misleading due to a lack of law enforcement and investigative techniques in the third world so non white serial killers are rarely caught.

Serial killers are rare enough that they can honestly be profiled on a case-by-case basis. Also the people doing this work take it seriously, it is a life's calling for many of them, they wouldn't misuse race as a tool in their profiling lest they ruin their case. After all, a successful profile can nab a serial killer and nabbing a true serial killer is a big deal and a major accomplishment.

I really hope you aren't reaching to extend this into a discussion about race profiling in regards to other crime (vs serial killers) in general. The two are very different.

Not without some evidence, imo. It's pretty stupid to assume anything in a homicide investigation, especially with a serial killer.
