Most painful submissions? Is it considered brave or dumb to not tap out?

I noticed a lot of fighters get a lot of criticism for tapping out (example, Conor was mocked mercilessly)

There are lots of submissions, or even strikes that are extremely painful and potentially career ending if the fighter refuses to tap out.

How would you rank the following submissions (and feel free to add some others) in terms of pain level, and difficulty in not tapping out to?

Also, when fighters refuse to tap out, is it considered brave and tough, or stupid since they are likely to sustain career altering damage and unnecessary punishment and still lose?

They're all painful
It's hard to choose because they all break bones (aside from the chokes)
But an RNC, guillotine can break a jaw bone applied by the right person. No doubt. The face crush has been quite popular as of late via Gordon Ryan tapping the highest level black belts with it

But if I had to choose, the armbar would be the 'least' worthy of a tapout.

And as always, if you haven't before, go roll for a month. All your questions may be answered

So you chose snap instead of tap? Or were those too fast?
We were rolling to blow off some steam after being told that our military careers were at an end before they could really begin. I hit him with a gogo to be flashy, not too tight or anything, just locked in. We laughed and high-fived. He dropped immediately back and cranked on a heel hook until my knee popped. I opted to not go for UCMJ charges because I'm a painfully kind person and have paid for it since.

Well. I don't even...

Not technically a sub, but Joe Lauzon VS Johnathan Pearce has gotta be up there -- he had somewhat of a modified full nelson thing while battering the poor dude's face.

Probably the submissions that will cripple you are the ones you want to tap.
Being out from a broken bone or bad tear, because of bravado or pride is senseless.
You sideline yourself away from training, getting better and making money.

Kimura or Americana can both bring tippy taps really fast. Neck cranks, can openers, or heck anything neck related suck for us old guys. Slicers are rough. I tap so fast to anything knee related I can't even answer lol. Many people are dumb, even at the enthusiast level. I had this kid (18 or 19) in a Kimura the other day and he wasn't going to tap, I could just sense it. I let it go and tried to explain to him this has some really really harsh consequences depending on on the person. I hope he listened.

Knee Bars and Calf Slicers hurt the worst imo

Heel hook. That'll rip your knee right apart. Not tapping to that if it's locked is a career ending decision, which is why Rousimar Palhares was let go by the UFC.
A friend of mine, who also trains BJJ occasionaly was on crutches for 8 months because of the hell hook....

And he tapped, but his opponent was faster.

F*** that shit, not tapping is retarded.

It's idiotic not to tap for limb based submissions or anything that can gravely injure you. The smart approach is to tap, then go back to the gym and make sure that it never happens again rather than letting your shit break, sitting out for a year wasting your career away doing rehab and surgeries when you could've spent that time actually getting better. Chokes are probably the only thing you can refuse to tap to since the worst case scenario is a black out.

Bruh, my daughter when she was young had been competing in both gymnastics and bjj. During this time a brother/sister pair decided to join the academy. They were both #1 ranked naga competitors at the time. The boy is rolling with my daughter and he caught her in a kimura and she wouldn’t tap. They spent what seemed like eternity imitating a wheel and just rolling around while the instructor looked on and finally stopped it. He then gave her a talking to about tapping. We had a good talk that night about her being too prideful and if she wanted to do gymnastics then bjj was in the back burner. She’s a collegiate gymnast now. And to this day she thinks she was right in that situation. But I hate watching kids crank kimuras.

In all seriousness, this a pretty cool experience/story.

Thanks for sharing and big ups to your daughter for her grit.
