Rampage wasn't in his prime, and was nervous as hell, but Saku's heart and willingness/ability to take punishment just to find an opening should be the main focus. It was also a very good performance by Rampage, all things considered.

Foreshadowing Arona a few years later.

Saku had the wits to see them coming.

I wouldnt say Rampage was in his prime. Maybe physically but you could tell he didn’t have the skills yet that he had later. It was kind of like GSP fighting Hughes in his 7th fight; too much to early.

What is kind of cool is that you can see that skills matter in that fight. Rampage had every physical advantage, but Sakuraba was able to find a way to defeat him. I certainly don’t see it going that way though in like 2005 with Rampage though with a few more years of training under his belt

That was "Prime Rampage"'s first fight in Pride.

His only other fight against anyone notable before then was a loss to Marvin Eastman, which he would claim back years later.
Scoring a touchdown at the super bowl and still they booed him

I remember before I could get Pride ppv's I had to order the VHS' online and waiting and waiting for them to arrive without looking online to see the results. One time I just had to see the results but I didn't have internet at the time. So I went to the mall where they had computers for the public in kind of a high traffic area and there were mobs of people waiting for their turn. Finally it was my turn. I sat down and someone had taken the ball (remember there were balls on the mouse?) someone had taken it out but I wasn't going to wait in line again because if you moved the mouse the right way slowly you could get to where you need to go aka search bar etc.

So I finally get to the search and I google Pride....well I had forgot to add the FC or fighting championship part and it led me to this gay pride site where there's dude's holding hands and basically it was a gay rights page. There's like 15 people behind me snickering as I fumble to get back to the search bar and the mouse just wouldn't do it. The ball was there, you had to put it in and move it a certain way and it just wasn't going. Everyone was like talking behind me, and I was really jacked at the time, wearing a tank top and looking kinda rugged so i'm sure that added to the confusion. I'm from a tiny hick town, so it only adds to the wtf. Anyway, I couldn't get off the page and just got up with my head down and walked away as people kinda laughed.

I don't have a point besides i'm a huge Sakuraba fan and for me he was the most interesting fighter in Pride and my all time favorite fighter. If it wasn't for Sakuraba I wouldn't have that funny story. I watched him in the UFC before that but he was just so dynamic on the ground with a beautiful low John Smith style single leg (wrestling and Judo was my life at the time) and I remember this card because it was on ppv and loaded with awesome fights. I still have the dvd. I also used to order ppv's and record them on VHS as they happened. I got like 300 VHS' and tons of mma dvd's I can't bring myself to throw away, despite the fact that I don't have a VHS player and they probably don't work anymore.

Beating Rampage, easy, when Both were in their prime.
That wasn't prime Rampage and Pride had also called him last minute (on purpose) for the fight, so he had less preparation and more weight to cut (Pride did those sorts of things all the time).

i hear it all the times, Fedor was not great. i also hear people "sream", that Bruce Lee, was a nobody....

Now, this was a fight for us old-school warriors---Fedor is the Greatist of all time, prove me wrong, using mma-math----Here is Sakuraba - Beating Rampage, easy, when Both were in their prime..What this shows me, Sakuraba was a BEAST.

Useless thread about old times and old fighters. All the fighters you mentioned are great, but they should not be compared to todays athletes. Also Lee was an actor not a fighter.

It all depends on if the Yakuza would have paid Rampage to take a dive or not, fake ass corrupt Pride was well known for it.

"Pro wrestling is strong but Yakuza is stronger" Sakuraba

Pride is the fakest most WWE like MMA org to ever exist, none of it was ever sanctioned or regulated by any recognized outside athletic commission.
