STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Gets New Release Date

Star-Wars-Oscar-Isaac-Vanity-Fair-Dragonlord.jpg

Star Wars: Episode VIII, directed by Rian Johnson, is being pushed back seven months, from Memorial Day weekend in 2017 to Dec. 15 of that year.

Instead, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will open on May 26, 2017, Star Wars' old release date. The Pirates movie, one of Disney's biggest franchises and returning Johnny Depp in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, was set to have opened July 7.

Disney insiders say the decision to push back the release of Episode VIII comes after the blockbuster success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens over the year-end holidays. They say they have now decided to give Episode VIII the same Christmas treatment.

The move gives the studio more time to work on the film. It also balances out Disney's tentpole schedule in 2017. As it stood, the studio was set to release Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5), Star Wars, Pirates and Cars 3 (June 16) all in summer. The studio didn't say whether the changes impact its plans to release an untitled fairy-tale movie on Dec. 22, but don't be surprised if that date changes.

News that Episode VIII will now open Dec. 15 likely won't be well received by Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros., who are set to open Ready Player One on that date. Opening a week later on Dec. 22 are Croods 2 andThe Six-Million Dollar Man.

Within minutes of the Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean announcement, Sony said it was moving up the release of Spider-Man from July 28, 2017, to July 7, 2017, while pushing back Jumanji seven months from Dec. 25, 2016, to July 28, 2017.

According to The Rock’s latest Instagram missive, Ilfenesh Hadera (Billions, Chi-raq, Show Me a Hero) will play Dwayne Johnson‘s love interest in the upcoming Baywatch movie. She joins a cast that also includes Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach. Priyanka Chopra (Quantico) was also previously reported to be in talks for a role.

Johnson wrote on Instagram: "Casting my #BAYWATCH love interest wasn't easy (extremely tough job but hey I'm one of the producers;) but we finally found her. For our coveted role of "STEF", she had to be a lot of things: Strong, intelligent, formidable, beautiful and funny.

Want to welcome the talented @ilfenator Ilfenesh Hadera to our #BAYWATCH family. She's a 5'11 walkin' smokestack with legs for days. Smart and tougher than new rope.. just the way we like 'em. And seeing as she's playing my love interest - my strong calloused hands are the ONLY HANDS allowed to rub suntan oil on her soft supple skin. You hear that Efron? Step out of line Zac and she'll knock your unattractive candy ass into next week. Mine too.

Our dope cast is coming together nicely with a few more big announcements/cool surprises along the way. Let's have some rated R fun.. We are the keepers of "The Bay". We are... #BAYWATCH. #SandSquadUpInThisBitch"

New Trailer for David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD Released

Suicide-Squad-Cast-011916-Dragonlord.jpg

Warner Bros. has released the first genuine trailer for Suicide Squad. Written and directed by David Ayer, the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice follow-up explores a very different corner of the DC Cinematic Universe, as it revolves around a group of villains who are enlisted by the government to carry out high-risk missions in exchange for commuted sentences.

The first official trailer paints a different, more colorful, much more playful picture of the film. Thanks to some good editing, the Bohemian Rhapsody music cue works better, and every villainous hero gets a little (some very little) moment to shine. Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn is going to absolutely own this movie. She’s pitch perfect bubbly-crazy with some real menace behind her silly antics. The trailer doesn’t disappoint.

The film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevigne, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez, Ike Barinholtz, Common, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, and Viola Davis. Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.

Jennifer Lawrence to Play Fidel Castro's Lover in MARITA

Jennifer-Lawrence-012016-Dragonlord.jpg

After starring in a film inspired by the life of Miracle Mop creator Joy Mangano, Jennifer Lawrence is ready to tackle another real-life woman.

The actress, who received her fourth Oscar nomination last week, is attached to portray Marita Lorenz in Marita, a hot pitch from Eric Warren Singer, co-writer of American Hustle.

Sony Pictures, moving aggressively, picked up the project from the Oscar-nominated scribe in a competitive situation. Matt Tolmach will produce the romantic spy drama with Lawrence and Scott Mednick. Andre Rouleau is also producing.

Marita centers on Lorenz and how she met and began an affair with Cuban leader Fidel Castro in 1959 when she was 19 years old. After living with Castro for a spell, Lorenz left Cuba and joined anti-communists in the U.S., where she was recruited by the CIA for an assassination mission. In 1960, she returned to Cuba to carry out the mission but, according to lore, yielded to love.

(Lorenz had quite the life, by the way. She also had an affair with a Venezuelan dictator, claimed to have been involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and spied on diplomats for the FBI in the 1970s. She wrote two autobiographies and lives in Maryland.)

TERMINATOR: GENISYS Sequel Removed from Paramount Schedule

Terminator-Genisys-T-800-Dragonlord.jpg

“Terminator 2,” the sequel to “Terminator: Genisys,” has been removed from Paramount’s schedule. According to Deadline, the film was originally slated for a May 19, 2017 release, but has since been replaced by “Baywatch.”

The franchise reboot, “Terminator Genisys,” was intended as the first film in a trilogy (with sequels following in 2017 and 2018), which would also incorporate a tie-in television series. However, the $150 million-plus “Genisys” grossed just $90 million in North America, whichseemed to spell doom for the sci-fi series. A report indicated that even the $440 million worldwide haul wasn’t enough for the film to make money.

“Terminator 2’s” removal from the schedule follows a recent report that ambitious plans for the “Terminator” franchise are “on hold indefinitely,” though one of the film’s producers later insisted they’re still moving forward, just at a slower pace.

Robert Knepper Joins JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK

Robert-Knepper-Jack-Reacher-2-Dragonlord.jpg

Robert Knepper has been cast in Paramount’s upcoming sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Once again starring Tom Cruise in the title role, the film sees Reacher return to the headquarters of his old Army unit, only to find he’s been accused of a 16-year-old murder.

Knepper plays Gen. Harkness, a retired general-turned-CEO of a private military contractor firm. He’s described as a man of power, experience and authority who thinks he’s the hero and is not afraid to do what’s necessary.

Cobie Smulders, Robert Catrini, Danika Yarosh, Aldis Hodge, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Austin Hebert co-star. Edward Zwick is directing from a script he co-wrote with Richard Wenk and Marshall Herskovitz. The film is due in theaters October 16.

Knepper will next be seen in Universal’s Hard Target 2 and the upcoming reboot of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks on Showtime. His recent credits include The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters, R.I.P.D., The Day The Earth Stood Still, Hitman, and Transporter 3.

TERM LIFE Trailer Starring Vince Vaughn, Hailee Steinfeld and... Cain Velasquez

2j4orpc.jpg

Focus World has released the Term Life trailer online. The film stars Vince Vaughn as a thief who gets framed by a corrupt cop (Bill Paxton) for the murder of a drug lord’s (Jordi Molla) son. The thief picks up his estranged daughter (Hailee Steinfeld) and goes on the run to avoid the mob’s wrath and stay alive for at least 21 days so his daughter can collect on his life insurance.

It’s a bit of a soft premise, and while early loglines made the movie sound a bit more serious, now it looks like the film leans more comic, which isn’t necessarily bad. Now that he’s been widely ridiculed for his deadpan performance in True Detective season 2 (a performance that, to be fair, was burdened by atrocious dialogue and a crummy story), perhaps playing another sarcastic character isn’t the worst thing for him.

The film also stars Jonathan Banks, Mike Epps, Jon Favreau, Shea Whigham, William Levy, Taraji P. Henson, Annabeth Gish, Terrence Howard, and Cain Velasquez. Term Life will be available On Demand and Digital HD on March 1st, and opens in theaters on April 8th.

AVATAR 2 Won’t Be Ready for Christmas 2017

nova-16435_168548669063_82771544063_2967382_6751052_n.jpg

Avatar 2, the first of three sequels to director James Cameron‘s 2009 3D sci-fi blockbuster, will not be ready in time for its planned Christmas 2017 release via Twentieth Century Fox.

The studio on Thursday declined comment on the delay, which individuals with knowledge of the situation confirmed. There is no new release date set for the movie, or word on the two other sequels, which Fox had planned to release in the same holiday corridor in 2018 and 2019.

It’s the second delay for Avatar 2, which Fox had originally planned to release by Christmas of this year. Cameron intends to shoot all three films in the trilogy at the same time in New Zealand, with Cameron and Jon Landau producing through Lightstorm Entertainment. Soundstage construction and some computer animation work is in the early stages, but a start date for filming has not been set.

Leads Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana in 2014 signed on for the trilogy, which is expected to pick up where the original left off, though Cameron has indicated much of it may be set on a moon of the planet Pandora and underwater.

Another tipoff that the plan to release Avatar at Christmas 2017 was in jeopardy came Wednesday, when Disney shifted Star Wars: Episode VIII to Dec. 15, 2017.

The director is known for being a perfectionist and an advocate of developing new technology to advance the craft, both traits that could potentially delay the process. The delay could be caused by the underwater element, which is notoriously tricky and often expensive.

McG in Talks to Direct MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

McG-Masters-of-the-Universe-012216-Dragonlord.jpg

McG (Terminator Salvation) is in talks that could lead to him directing Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists and Franklin Entertainment.

Hollywood has been trying to figure out the movie for years, and it could have Transformers potential even if the most identifiable version was the 1987 Cannon film that wasn’t a success and which starred Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. It has been more successful as an animated property.

Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing, with DeVon Franklin. Last script is by the writing team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch. McG will oversee a rewrite, first. McG previously launched Charlie’s Angels for Sony. McG is directing the New Line horror thriller The Babysitter.

Deepika-Padukone-xXx3-Dragonlord.jpg

Deepika Padukone will play the female lead opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. She joins Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Tony Jaa and Jet Li in the sequel directed by D.J. Caruso. Samuel L. Jackson is returning to reprise his role.

The original pic starred Diesel as an extreme sports athlete recruited to be a spy and use his unique skill set to stop a global terrorist. The movie grossed $142 million domestically. A sequel followed in 2005, but it was made without Diesel and underwhelmed at the box office.

Diesel has since warmed to the idea of returning to the franchise with production set to start later in January. Plot details on the pic are unknown. Padukone will play a a razor-sharp huntress who helps Cage during his latest mission. She can most recently be seen in award-winning and critically acclaimed films Piku and Bajirao Mastani.

lol nice. wasn't even aware of this. given Velasquez's presence in the trailer, I'd assume he has a nice amount of screentime. Cool. Probably won't say more than two to three lines though. I'll keep this one in mind as I do like Vaughan and Favreau anyway and feel it will be cool to see Cain in a movie.

Rest of the cast is good too.

Anybody remember the old animated version of BFG?

I loved it as a child.

LABYRINTH to Get a Reboot from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Writer

Labyrinth-Connelly-Bowie-Dragonlord.jpg

Labyrinth, Jim Henson’s 1986 fantasy film starring David Bowie, is getting rebooted for the 21st century. TriStar has closed a deal with The Jim Henson Co. to produce a new iteration and has hired Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman to pen the script.

Labyrinth told of a teenager, played by Jennifer Connelly in one of her first roles, who has to navigate a fantastical maze in order to save her young brother, kidnapped by a goblin king (Bowie). It was the last film directed by Henson, had a script by Monty Python member Terry Jones and was exec produced by George Lucas.

Despite the film’s current popularity, the movie was a box-office disappointment at the time of its release and led to Henson’s exit from film directing. It was only in the intervening years that the film gained a strong cult following. It is unclear if the new take is a reimagining of the story or a sequel, as it is being kept deep in the vault.

Lauren Cohan Cast as Martha Wayne in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Lauren-Cohan-Batman-v-Superman-Dragonlord.jpg

Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead, The Boy) seemingly confirms that she is playing Bruce Wayne's ill-fated mother, Martha, in Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Cohan's name was added to IMDB's cast list for the film and the 34-year old actress retweeted the news via her official Twitter account.

What makes this bit of casting even more interesting is that Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) is playing her husband, Thomas Wayne, and he just landed a major role in AMC's The Walking Dead. So, in a twisted way you could say Maggie is married to Negan.

In the film, we'll see a flashback to the pivotal moment in which Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in a dark alleyway after taking their son, Bruce, to go see The Mark of Zorro.
