Jason Reitman to Write and Direct MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN

dy117m.jpg

With his upcoming directorial feature Labor Day screening in Toronto, news is already breaking about Jason Reitman’s (Up in the Air, Young Adult) next effort. It looks like Reitman will write and direct an adaptation of Chad Kultgen’s novel, Men, Women & Children. Financed by Indian Paintbrush, the film would follow a “family with junior high school students that deals with the navigation of sexual awakenings in a digital age where the internet has made pornography, blogs and social networking just a few clicks away.”

Deadline reports that not only is Reitman lining up Men, Women & Children as his next directorial effort, but that Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner and Rosemarie DeWitt are circling roles. The report also has Cameron Diaz possibly signing on for a part as well. The film would move into production as early as this November.

Liam McIntyre, Kseina Solo Up for Roles in New STAR WARS?

Liam-McIntyre-Kseina-Solo-Dragonlord.jpg

Jedi News first ran the rumor that Emperor Palpatine would be returning for Star Wars: Episode VII, which was then picked up by Latino Review who managed to uncover some more details on it. With that said, it's worth paying attention to another couple of casting rumors the site just posted. According to the Jedi News, the aptly named Latvian actress Ksenia Solo (Black Swan, The Lost Girl) is being considered for the role of the daughter of Princess Leia and Han Solo. They don't mention if she's actually read for it, or is just someone Abrams and the studio are looking at.

This next one is a bit more solid. Apparently a correspondent from starwarsreport.com reports that he had a conversation with Spartacus actor Liam McIntyre who revealed that he read for a Jedi role in the movie. Of course even if these guys have read for roles, there's no guarantee they'll get them or even wind up front-runners but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Rumor: Liam McIntyre and Kseina Solo Up for Roles in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

Comments: Considering her last name, it would be a shame if Kseina doesn't get a part in this.

First Official Trailer for Jose Padilha's ROBOCOP Remake

Robocop-First-Trailer-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for director Jose Padilha’s (Elite Squad) remake of RoboCop. After seeing multiple set photos from last year, we finally get to see the new Robocop in action. While the original 1987 Paul Verhoeven pic is one of my favorite sci-fi action flicks, this new version looks pretty decent and has potential (but wasn't blown away with the trailer either). Would have been more confident if this was rated R though. The new film looks to retain the satirical tone of the original, this time tackling military drone usage. One key difference is Murphy doesn't die upon his transformation in this new take. The film stars Joel Kinnaman (AMC's The Killing), Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley. RoboCop opens February 7, 2014.

Synopsis: In the film, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

GAME OF THRONES' Alan Taylor to Direct New TERMINATOR

Thor-Set-Director-Alan-Taylor-Dragonlord.jpg

After creating worlds filled with dragons and demi-gods, Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor looks ready to enter the world of cyborgs. Sources tell Variety that Taylor is in talks to direct the rebooted Terminator film for Skydance Productions, Paramount and Annapurna Pictures. Plot details have not been revealed other than this is the first film in a stand alone trilogy. It is still unknown at this time what part Arnold Schwarzenegger will have in the film, though he has said in past interviews he will be back for the film.

After acquiring distribution rights in June and setting a June 26, 2015 release date, Par, Skydance and Annapurna have been hard at work to find the person to guide this latest installment. The studio had targeted Ang Lee early on, but a deal could never be reached. Other early targets included Rian Johnson and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve. In the end, Taylor won the job in helping reboot the iconic sci-fi franchise.

Will Smith in Talks for INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel for 2016

mcssiv.jpg

Although Independence Day director Roland Emmerich previously stated that star Will Smith wouldn’t be involved in the film’s sequel, in part for fear of him overshadowing the cast, it now looks as if the two are at least entering into talks. Perhaps the lackluster performances of some of Smith’s recent efforts have spurred him into dipping into the well of previous films, especially since he’s rumored to be involved in sequels to Hancock, Bad Boys and I, Robot. What’s one more?

Whether Smith is involved in the planned Independence Day sequel or not, Emmerich isn’t sure that the film will hit Fox’s target release date of summer 2015, saying it’s likely to open in summer of 2016. For those of you who like measuring your own time on this Earth relative to movie releases, that’s 20 years since the original debuted.

Dwayne Johnson to Star in THE FALL GUY for Director McG

Dwayne-Johnson-Wrestlemania-Press-Dragonlord.jpg

The long-in-the-works movie version of 1980s TV series The Fall Guy is coming together once again, this time as a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson. Johnson is in negotiations to star in a big-screen remake that McG is in talks to direct. Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment is financing the action film alongside WWE Studios. Writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller (Thor, X-Men: First Class) executed the draft that attracted all the attention.

Fall Guy was an ABC series that ran from 1981 to 1986 and starred Lee Majors as a Hollywood stunt man who supplemented his income by doing bounty hunter work. He was joined on his escapades, which usually involved him transferring a stunt from a movie to the job at hand, by his sidekick cousin (Douglas Barr) and a fetching female stunt actress played by Heather Thomas.

Hollywood has long been trying to translate Fall Guy to the silver screen. The project was set up for years at Warner Bros., and more recently at DreamWorks, where Parkes/MacDonald tried to get it off the ground with Casino Royale's Martin Campbell at the helm and Nicolas Cage starring.

Sophie Cookson Lands Female Lead in THE SECRET SERVICE

Sophie-Cookson-Secret-Service-Lead-Dragonlord.jpg

British actress Sophie Cookson has landed the female lead in Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service starring Colin Firth and Taron Egerton. Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine also star. Based on the comic series by Mark Millar and David Gibbons, production is expected to start this fall. Vaughn and Jane Goldman have written the adaptation.

Story follows a veteran secret agent who takes a young upstart under his wing. While Vaughn had looked at more well-known actresses like Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote, he decided to go with a fresh face who he felt better fit the part. He took a similar strategy in casting Egerton. Cookson's best-known credit to date is the British mini-series Moonfleet starring Ray Winstone.

Some may raise their eyebrows of both these choices, but Vaughn has shown he has a good eye for picking newcomers. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Moretz were relative unknowns when he cast them as his leads in Kick-Ass, and while Daniel Craig may have broken out as James Bond, execs realized Craig was leading man material after Vaughn set him to star in his crime caper Layer Cake.

First Featurette for Steve McQueen's 12 YEARS A SLAVE

12-Years-a-Slave-Featurette-Dragonlord.jpg

Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave received massive acclaimed when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, and now the first featurette for the film has been released. The true story is based on Solomon Northup’s autobiography of the same name, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) as Northup, an educated and married black man living in New York in 1841. Northup was approached by two men about a job offer in Washington D.C., but when he showed up he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade.

The featurette contains plenty of new footage, and listened to the interviews, it looks like they’ve stayed pretty close to the source material. It’s a powerful story, and it looks like it will be a powerful movie. The film also stars Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Quvenzhane Wallis, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Scoot McNairy, Garrett Dillahunt, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry, Michael K. Williams, and Brad Pitt. 12 Years a Slave will play at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening on October 18th.

First Official Image of Tom Hardy in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

Warner Bros. has released the first official image to George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road featuring Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) as Max Rockatansky. Mad Max: Fury Road–the fourth in the franchise’s history–stars Tom Hardy in the title role of Max Rockatansky, alongside Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Prometheus) as Imperator Furiosa. According to Miller, “Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.”

Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) plays Toast, Riley Keough (Magic Mike) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.

Trailer for Richard Ayoade’s THE DOUBLE Starring Jesse Eisenberg

illsgh.jpg

The first trailer for writer/director Richard Ayoade’s new film The Double has been released online. Based on the novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a government clerk whose life is destroyed after what he believes to be an exact copy of himself begins working in his office and attempts to ruin his life. The pic looks to be significantly different from Ayoade’s last feature, Submarine, and this trailer would not be out of place in a 1970s cinema. It’s a stylish and odd first look at the film, but it’s incredibly effective. The film is slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, so look for first impressions to hit soon. The film also stars Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox, and Yasmin Paige.

Synopsis: Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite — confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

First Trailer for ALL IS BRIGHT Starring Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti

mwuys6.jpg

The first trailer for the dark comedy All Is Bright has been released online. Directed by Phil Morrison (Junebug), the film stars Paul Giamatti as an ex-con out on parole who, when faced with a dwindling job market, decides to go in with his ex-partner (Paul Rudd) and sell Christmas trees. This trailer highlights a bitingly dark comedic tone, and the chemistry between Rudd and Giamatti looks great. Hopefully the film is a winning entry in the “cynical Christmas movie” genre. The film also stars Sally Hawkins. Almost Christmas will be available VOD on September 10th and hits theaters on October 4th.

Synopsis: ALL IS BRIGHT is the story of two French Canadians who travel to New York City during the holiday season with a get-rich-quick scheme of selling Christmas trees. Dennis (Paul Giamatti) is a no-nonsense, recently released ex-con trying to get his life – and his wife – back. Rene (Paul Rudd) is Dennis’s charming, shallow, former partner-in-crime who is now living with Dennis’s estranged wife. Feeling guilty and knowing Dennis needs a job, Rene reluctantly agrees to make Dennis a partner in the scheme. Though the two former friends struggle with each other and an eclectic array of tough New York customers, they discover much about themselves in the process.

Shailene Woodley and Others That Passed FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

Shailene-Woodley-Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-Dragonlord.jpg

It was love at first sight for Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. But was the same true for Universal Pictures and the new Fifty Shades of Grey stars, Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam? Sources say the studio explored several other options before settling on the pair, who were announced Sept. 2 via tweets from Fifty Shades author EL James. Ryan Gosling was the original prototype for the 27-year-old billionaire with a penchant for S&M, but he was not interested. Garrett Hedlund was heavily courted by Universal, but the Tron: Legacy star passed in July because he couldn't connect with the character. Other actors in the mix included British TV star Christian Cooke.

Hunnam initially was reluctant to take on the role but said yes to an Aug. 23 meeting with director Sam Taylor-Johnson and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti. Sources say the meeting convinced Hunnam, who agreed to a chemistry read with Johnson the following week. Universal then closed deals with the actors by Labor Day. The duo are signed for a trilogy.

Johnson, 23, best known for a short-lived Fox sitcom (Ben and Kate) and as the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, emerged as the front-runner in the past few weeks despite being the lone non-Brit among the project's principals (James, Marcel, Taylor-Johnson and Hunnam hail from the U.K.). British actress Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) drew interest as well -- insiders say Jones had the look and ability but at 30 is too old to play a 21-year-old college student. Shailene Woodley was an early favorite of James, who was heavily involved in the search, but even though Woodley wasn't afraid of the nudity in the film's explicit sex scenes, she has conflicting press obligations for the would-be franchise Divergent.

Alicia Vikander, Imogen Poots and Elizabeth Olsen also were considered, but sources say Johnson was a top choice for Taylor-Johnson, who got the directing job in June thanks to her test footage that blew everyone away. Still, the studio, leaning toward an unproven draw in Hunnam, had concerns that she wasn't a big enough name. Reps for the stars also were nervous. Handled correctly, Fifty Shades could catapult Johnson and Hunnam to the A-list. If it fails, it could end up like Showgirls, whose star, Elizabeth Berkley, never recovered.

Tom Hiddleston to Star in Guillermo del Toro's CRIMSON PEAK

Tom-Hiddleston-Image-0906-Dragonlord.jpg

Tom Hiddleston is replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in Crimson Peak, a gothic film to be directed by Guillermo del Toro. The thriller, which will also feature Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam, has set a start date of January 2014 to begin shooting. Cumberbatch exited Crimson Peak in late August. There wasn't a reason given for the departure at the time.

Few details are available as to the film’s plot or characters, except to say that Hiddleston and Chastain would play aristocratic siblings. Del Toro called it a "classical gothic romance ghost story" and described it as "very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules."

Legendary, which covered 75 percent of the budget for del Toro's Pacific Rim, will produce and provide financing, while Universal Pictures will have the option to come on board as a finance partner at a later date. Hiddleston, who played Loki in The Avengers, is set to appear in November's Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World. The actor was also cast in Muppets Most Wanted, which has set a March 2014 release date.
