Angle isn't even top 3. Smith's credentials blow Angles out of the water. 6 World Titles(2 of which being Olympic championships). Nobody else matches that. You're ignorant about wrestling if you pick someone like Angle over Smith.

the big thing for angle is the weight differance. he was always small for his weight class

i actually thought he lost that match. of course i dont really understand freestyle so much...

i agree that smith is the best wrestler in US history

does anyone know if sanderson is planning on going to the 08 olympics?

Upon further replays it can be see that Angle was gut wrenched and during the gut wrench his elbow touched meaning it should have been a two point gut wrench. However the referee thought that Angle only touched hands so he only gave up one point.

KO opinions are one thing but there are stone cold facts backing up Smith, he trumps Angle in every where of accomplishments.

Also there wasnt a weight difference for Angle at the international level, i believe the weight class was 220 so the guys he was wreslting were the same size.

I probably should have made it clear that I meant any and all of the guys being considered in the PFP best argument, and not just Smith and Gable ... Because, really, some of the guys may have faced tougher competition in their respective class than the other ones did ... and unless you want to spend countless hrs breaking it all down, then ... it's pretty much just differing opinions at this point, right?

It's cool and all to have your personal favorites, but when you get to a point where several guys have very similar achievements in the same sport... again, unless you want to take the time to collect all of their records, break them down, and compare their respective levels of opposition, etc... There are literally TONS of intangibles involved in pushing one guy above the other at this, the highest level of wrestling. It's all very intriguing .. but, I really don't think I would want to spend the time it would take to be able to definitively place one guy above the other right now...lol

Also, I just wanted to see how you guys felt about Cole Konrad... IMHO, he does a whole lot of backing out lately, and also pushes guys out a lot.. And, while I understand that the shoving can be very helpful at heavyweight to get a guy off balance, etc... I also know the refs call the other guys for it, but pretty much just let big ol' Cole do whatever he wants, and never call him for it.

BTW, I think once Cole gets in there with guys like Tolly T. then he more than likely will not be afforded the biased calls, and he also won't be able to take it easy, as he can sometimes be extremely lazy in there [IMHO anyway]. Don't get me wrong, I think he's definitely a very talented guy ... he's just been allowed to become very lazy in there, and it won't serve him well once he steps up to the international scene.

i think conrad will do well against top international competition. though he wont be able to rely on his size as much, he has the skill t compete at the top level. i tihnk u are overrating the refs bias towards him. his trips are amazing!

I think Konrad will jump right into the top 4 or 5 of US heavyweights, like every other collegiate wrestler his biggest transition will be how he adapts to the mat wrestling used in freestyle.

- King Cole will be in the top 2 in Freestyle within a year (my prediction). I think he'd do the same in Greco too. Must be nice to have that option.
- I think Sanderson is officially retired from competing (correct me if I'm wrong)

Yes barring a suprise comeback Sanderson has retired and is currently committed full time as the head coach of Iowa St.

The guy made almost 200k being a wrestling coach this year. Thats aside from his camps, personal appearances, and he gets a free car. Not a bad deal. Mo can win us a medal though.

WE WANT CAEL! WE WANT CAEL! he is young enough... 2 years of training he could be fantastic I think

a very cool thread, although typical of wrestler189's; they can often be found on the Matt Hughes official website, breathing heavily whilst browsing in the gallery. :icon_chee

war ben askren. hes been doing well so far during the tournament...but best one? 2nd to Dustin schatler IMO...

ben has talked about doing mma. my guess is he would do 185, though koschek wrestled 174 and fights at 170. either 170 or 185 for askren

haha i bet you felt stupid about this post after Schlatter lost.
I hate that he lost so bad though. Schlatter kicks ass. i hope he transitions to MMA.

OK here goes ... there's a whole group of very good wrestlers coming into MMA now that the $$ is coming up from the penny ante shit it was in the past.

Cain was mentioned before, but he's definitely a beast ... and worth yet another mention. He killed Jesse Fujarczyk in StrikeForce, and also had Constant rolling and diving away out of desperation in the Bodogfight tourney. It's too bad he broke his hand in the latter fight .. otherwise he'd be set to completely tool Zentsov on the next Bodog PPV card.

Kellan Fluckiger is yet another beast of a heavyweight from ASU ... This guy should be extremely good too, as he's doing some small time boxing/toughman stuff to get him battle ready with the stand up portion of MMA ... And, word has it [this is rumor, as I was told nothing] that he absolutely murdered Miodrag Petkovich in the last Bodogfight Costa Rica [shot for seasons 3 and 4]. Miodrag isn't a world beater by any means, however.. to be rumored to have completely walked through him in your pro debut is definitely impressive to me.

Ryan Bader is another ASU product, and yet another guy that had an ultra aggressive wrestling style that should work very, very well for MMA. Look him up on youtube ... you'll see just a small example of how athletic this guy truly is. He'll be fighting at 205.

CB Dollaway .. again, type in that name on youtube, and you'll see why this massive influx of high level athletes coming into MMA from wrestling will change the face of the sport for years to come. He'll be in there at 185.

Gray Maynard was also mentioned earlier, and yep ... he's yet another guy that should make a big impact in the sport [at 155].

Matt Grice reminds me a lot of Crunk, only stronger, has at least as good of wrestling, and a wide open, brawling style with extremely heavy hands at 155. IMO he'll kill Etim [unless he takes Terry down and gets sloppy from guard] at UFC 70. Anyway, he's yet another one to keep an eye on.

Mike Massenzio looks really solid at 185 .. although he never quite lived up to his full potential in wrestling [he was very highly touted out of HS, yet never was recruited by a major school and wound up doing both DIV II and JC instead], he does look to have good sub defense, and also stays very active from guard [not a lay and prayer at all].

Nic Fekete is also interested in MMA at some point, and he's #4 nationally at 211.5 right now. Keep an eye out for him some day in the near future.

I'll think of more later guys...

this is a BEAUTIFUL post.

Wow, and most of them are UFC fighters or underachieving Pride guys.

If you guys don't see how the UFC rules benefit American wrestlers and not a Mixed Martial Artist, I don't know what to say to you.
