The combat jiu jitsu thread peaked my interest in the idea. Do mma competitions with the gi exist? Most people probably imagine it being really slow and boring, but I think it sounds awesome. I'm thinking spider guard, inverted guards, flying submissions, leg drags, more throws (maybe?), sweet collar chokes, and just general badassery. And I think guys actually fighting with clothing on would further show what "could" happen on teh streets (obviously still within a set of rules, so not a complete representation), rather than two shirtless dudes in board shorts being "as real as it gets".

It'd be pretty cool if the ufc had a "gi division" or something, no?

The gi was allowed in PRIDE, but wasn't often seen. Yoshida did it, but didn't do all that well (one gi choke in 18 fights? Two?). Nakamura did it, and wore it right into one of the most memorable bad decision/epic fails in PRIDE history.

Can't recall any gi vs gi matchups off the top of my head (Astra, maybe?), but it turns out that wearing a gi when your opponent isn't doesn't work out all that well.

Isn't combat sambo essentially MMA with a gi? A gi top at least.

Lol yes, but in my head, both competitors would be wearing the gi. Maybe that would make the outcome a bit different? Maybe not..

I don't know, you tell me. Haha, I guess it sounds that way.

edit: just looked it up, and yes. Though it doesn't look like what I fantasized about. Haha

This highlight certainly makes it look like MMA in a gi top.

That would be horrible! That would only fit into several martial arts and fighting styles...such as taekwondo, judo, karate etc., other sports like wrestling, greco roman wrestling and boxing don't use gi's.

Once cannot takedown, body throw or box while in a gi?

OP: I think it would be awesome. It would make ground/takedown/clinch battles alot more fun and technical.

Yes, check out youtube for AJJIF Combat jui-jitsu.

This idea is something i have been looking into putting together. Would be a bit of a throwback to the original days of the UFC and would also give guys who wanted to test there "self defense" BJJ against a more real life scenario. 8 ounce grappling gloves for optimal protection.

Would be an avenue for the guys in the gym that wonder what there self defense is like but don't want to go into MMA.

I think it would be awesome too. I am sure that if MMA evolved with a gi instead of no-gi, we would all be talking about how great judo is for MMA takedowns, while wrestlers just get stuffed all the time.

Pankration tourneys sometimes have the gi don't they? It is basically MMA in a gi, but I don't think you can strike the head on the ground.

Striking and grappling that the UFC would love.....

Yea Combat Sambo is basically MMA with a GI top..pretty cool to watch.

i think i mentioned it in the other thread also, but yeah, i would really like to see this done, preferably in the US. The gi obviously makes a difference in jiu jitsu, so it stands to reason that it would alter MMA fights as well.

As others have already alluded to, there was another thread (about Sport Ju-Jutsu, I think) that talked about this kind of thing.

Turns out there are numerous competition formats around the world that are similar to "gi MMA", but most of them are geographically limited (Combat SAMBO to Russia, Full Contact Ju-Jutsu to Poland, etc.). The only really global competition format is Sport Ju-Jutsu, which features in the world games, but it is more like amatuer MMA in a gi.

A large international governing body (e.g. FILA, IJF) or prominent promotion (e.g. UFC, SF) needs to start holding competitions under a uniform ruleset in order for "gi MMA" to takeoff. Currently the scene is too fragmented.
