mma vs muay thai

Then I believe you should try an MMA class and see if it's what you expected. If you liked it, do MMA, if not, try MT and see if you like it more.

Most gyms I know of that are MMA focused have MT classes and BJJ classes with some boxing sprinkled about. I have never seen a strict MMA gym where you go in and learn "MMA." I am sure they exist, but that seems odd to me. I mean you need to have a base. If you like striking then MT or boxing should be your base. If you like being on the ground and submissions then BJJ should be your base. Otherwise you'll be sloppy at both. For example, on TUF last week they had one lady with a MT background fight another with a BJJ background. The MT with the former was fantastic but her ground game was lacking and vice versa for the other. Many, not all mind you, but many strict BJJ practitioners have weaker stand-up. The dead give away is the kicks. You can get away somewhat with sloppy punching, but sloppy kicks look like a monkey f'n a football.

Depends on the gym you are attending, more information needed to give real opinions.
