According to this ESPN article from April 2020, the California State Athletic Commission began holding weekly digital training sessions for MMA judges in March 2020 to help judges retain their scoring ability during the Covid-19 pandemic. John McCarthy (Big John) ran an exercise during these training sessions in which the judges would watch fights back, score them, and discuss their rationale amongst their peers.
Jon Jones controversial February 2020 fight with Dominick Reyes was one of the fights used during their March 23 2020 digital training session. According to this article, of the eighteen MMA judges who took part in it, every single one scored the fight for Dominick Reyes including John McCarthy (Big John).
Below is the excerpt from the article.
"On the scoring training video call, when it was asked whether everyone thought Reyes should have gotten the decision, the response was a unanimous "yes." The judges assigned to that bout -- Chris Lee, Marcos Rosales and Joe Soliz -- were not on the call. But Texas Combative Sports program assistant manager Jim Erickson was.The bout came down to the fact, the judges on the call said, that Reyes had more effective striking.
"He won the first three rounds," McCarthy said.
This does not change anything, but it should leave little doubt that Dominick Reyes really was robbed of a victory over Jones. It sounds as though the three judges that scored the fight were the only three working MMA judges that would have scored the fight for Jones.
This was indeed a clear cut "robbery" that unfortunately for Dominick Reyes occurred in the biggest fight of his life and likely costed him millions of dollars in future earnings.
Stop bringing the UFC back to Texas Dana.
