There are 7 overall key aspects

Wrestling offense (various types of takedowns)
Wrestling defense (takedown defense- TDD)
Submission offense
GnP
Submission defense
Top control
Dangerous from bottom.

I think most people rank them in order of importance the way I have it listed. I'd say its up for debate.

I do wonder though how sherbros rate good mma grapplers comparatively.

IE.
Weidman & Rockhold

Rockhold had better subs, top control, bottom game
Weidman had better takedowns, takedown defense

Both probably equal in terms of sub defense and gnp

Who would you say was a better grappler in MMA?

What are some others who were very good in very different aspects of grappling which makes them overall close to equal?

That's 7, I numbered them for you.

Maia best submission guy probably ever in mma. Palhares even though he was nuts fighting someone who will break a bone is scary. Mir and that too. If you know the dude will keep cranking that's extremely effective an mma.

Oh merab he has like a 100 wins in a row solely off grappling

Those 2 guys were very evenly matched.

LIke if they were having a grappling match at the time of their fight I'd slightly lean towards Weidman. At the same time in an MMA fight we saw what happened when Teh Chris was in control vs what happened when Luke was in control.

At the same time we know that Teh Chris made an incredibly stupid decision on that wheel kick. At the same time I feel they were quite evenly match on the feet with Teh Chris having better boxing while Luke having better kicks.

I did want to see a second fight between them but the MMA Gods did not want that to happen.

Weidman and Maia both mentioned in this thread brings up a good example: Maia is the best BJJ fighter but short notice, sluggish Weidman that had to cut stupid amounts of weight was able to win all the grappling exchanges.

Takedown defense is the most important aspect of grappling, it's arguably the single most important skill in MMA

If you can avoid being taken down, jiujitsu doesn't exist, strength/power advantage is reduced and we've seen countless fighters exhaust themselves out of fights through failed TD attempts

Take someone like Jon Fitch, no power of note, not an especially slick submission guy. Prior to GSP, only taken down 7 total times through 22 fights and became a long time title contender/challenger

Chuck Liddell only had 8 total take downs in his career, 1/2 of which came after he lost to Rampage. 1 submission win. He's arguably an all time great "grappler" despite having almost never used it offensively

This thread highlights why I feel we were so cheated never getting to see Khabib/GSP
