MMA forgotten stories thread

Back in the day someone on Sherdog forums was talking shit about Randleman. It got back to Randleman and he thought it was actually the site founder Jeff "Sherdog" Sherwood saying it. He ended up seeing Sherwood at a PRIDE event and confronting him about it, threatening him etc. Coleman ended up calming Randleman down and defusing the situation. Randleman ended up apologizing later and giving Sherwood a hug.

This is a perfect thread for @gono btw where you at bruh
lol I remember Sherwood talking about this on the SRN when it was still around, he also talked about some crazy brawl involving the Hells Angels at an MMA show with chairs flying all over the place, knives etc. That was the true wild west days of MMA, do you know the show I'm talking about?

Not sure it's much of a story, but something that had me watching intently way back when

It was in early 90 years. Some ukrainian mob guy called "Baton" (nick name) spent his free time in jail. He was boring and got idea to sparring with Igor Vovchanchyn. Some people went to Igor and bring him an offer to fight in prison with their boss. It was very risky, but they paid good money. This fight happened illeagally and Igor beated him very much. Nothing personal, just a fight for money. It was hight risky for Igor, becouse he went to prison illegally.

Josh Koscheck also beat up an internet troll, props to the troll actually stepping up.

Josh Neer also beat THE FUCK out of a troll mercilessly

Nam Phan against some guy off the street who came to their gym

So, there’s a pretty well known narrative around here that Iaquinta cursed out the fans at UFC Fairfax when he got the decision against Masvidal and the crowd boo’d in disapproval.

I was there...

There were two guys, about ten rows up that when Al was on the mic, were standing up (amidst mostly seated people) and making obscene gestures while saying “fu**you” and other things of that sort... He was looking exactly in their direction and even gestured towards them with his hand when Al replied with “fu**you!” I sincerely believe that was aimed at just those two individuals and not the entire arena, as legend would have you believe.

Raging Al is indeed raging, just not how most of you might think!

btw I also thought Masvidal should have gotten the nod.

Ariel had those two guys on his show while AL was being interviewed and they apologized and al was so cool about it. First tine I really heard al talk and I liked him ever since.

Did that really happen?

Benson Henderson and the great toothpick mystery

benson-henderson-toothpick-1.jpg

The former UFC lightweight champion flashed a toothpick in his mouth during a fight with Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night 60 on Saturday in Broomfield, Colo. It wasn't the first time Henderson has done it, but the implication that he was competing in a fight with a sharp object in his mouth caused a stir on social media. Some people even called for the athletic commission to do something about it.

"I don't think it's illegal," Henderson told Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I don't think it's against the rules."

Henderson, who beat Thatch by submission with a rear-naked choke in the fourth round, doesn't think it was dangerous and said he has been doing it since he was a high school wrestler.

"It's as dangerous for me to have a toothpick in your mouth as it is to have a 200-pound man punch me in the face hard or try to kick me in the face," said Henderson, who moved up a weight class to fight Thatch on just two weeks notice. I'm more worried about that, to be honest."

Henderson (22-5) said the only time the toothpick has affected him with regards to MMA was one of the first times he ever rolled with coach John Crouch at The MMA Lab in Glendale, Ariz. Crouch had his back and was going for a neck crank when the toothpick pressed into his cheek. "Smooth" said he also once swallowed a toothpick when he was trying to play a practical joke on his mother by scaring her.

"She was surprised, startled," Henderson said. "Then I laughed. When I started choking, she got seriously scared.

"It was bad, but I lived. I was able to tell the story."

Henderson, 31, said the toothpick isn't some kind of good luck charm. It's just something he has done for a long time that he can't seem to shake.

"I don't have any superstitions," Henderson said. "I won world titles with a toothpick. I defended it without a toothpick. It all depends. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. It's a bad habit. I know I shouldn't do it, but it's fine."

The toothpick usually gets hidden in his mouth during fights, either under his tongue or in his cheek. It'll appear here and there mid-round and then go away again until the end -- especially when Henderson wins, which is a common occurrence.

It certainly hasn't affected his performance or caused any injury to his opponents. Henderson held the UFC lightweight title from February 2012 to August 2013. Since then, he is 3-2, including a somewhat controversial decision loss to Donald Cerrone last month in Boaton.

"I do it every day in practice," Henderson said. "I've done it most of my fights."

Like it or not, the Henderson's toothpick is here to stay.

Another was Dominick Cruz beating the fuck out of a "ninja" lol, this was back when people still believed in all the eastern "mystical" bullshit about martial arts, hell just look at the dislikes, still so many butthut IDIOTS out there who think a shaolin monk could destroy a UFC fighter LMAO, they remind of the "It's still real to me dammit!" guy

Shogun had a fight at HW w mark coleman and broke his arm defending on a takedown. The ref notices and stops the fight, but Mark didnt see it and he cant understand what happened and is not sure whats going on. At this point Shoguns brother Ninja slide into the ring, and Mark, still in agression mode squares up with him. Things are about to simmer down when Wanderlei, who was in the crowd at the time, comes in to attack mark, but Phil Baroni who was cornering mark shoots on wand and takes him down, and then Mark steps on his neck.

Kazuhiro Nakamura v Wanderlei Silva 2005

If you can find the original american version of the Pre fight interviews its hilarious as Kaz Nak says "tell wanderlei, shut the fuck UP!" in epic japanglish

Anyway in pride gi's and also Aoki's technicolor dream pants were allowed. This was a surprisingly competitve fight on the feet, but Nak felt uncomfortable in his gi and took it off mid fight which allowed Wandy a chance to get the upperhand and put it on him for the win.

I remembered watching this fight thinking this guy just committed suicide messing with that gi.
Silva's manager ducked Weidman hard for almost two years. They were spooked.
what do you mean they were spooked?

This fight!

arona_jackson.jpg

On my Critical Countdown dvd, some of the fights have an option to watch certain fights with no commentary. Arona v Jackson is one of these. Arona at one point spinning from his stomach to his back hit jackson with an elbow, and you see him apologize to Rampage. Then when Arona almost koed him with a upkick to the jaw, arona looks to the referee to say he is knocked out. In truth Rampage was indeed very badly hurt, but the ref doesnt stop it. Arona asks him if hes ok and rampage in alot of pain says "yeah..." but you can tell by his voice he is not ok.

We all know what happened in the end,but Arona's mercy and compassion cost him big time, and most people dont know the depth of it. I wish all fights could have option to turn commentary off.

MMA fans eat your hearts out! Finally someone has stepped up to the plate and exposed one of the most hated “personalities” in MMA, Jerry Millen. Jerry Millen recently took part in an interview with CBS and former PRIDE announcer Bas Rutten decided enough was enough so he made a post revealing the dirt on Jerry Millen.

Bas kicked off the post by letting fans know that Millen’s name is actually Gary but he goes by the name Jerry because it is “cool”.

First of all, everything is fake about this guy, his name is Gary Millen, not Jerry, he doesn’t think Gary sounds cool so Jerry was the name, ask for his drivers licence. About his appearance I have some comments too, but that’s for later, I have way more on him.

He went on to say Millen knew nothing about MMA and he faked it in his video tape he submitted to PRIDE when applying for a job.

He got his job by faking that he knew the MMA game, his friend, who knows MMA, would tell him through a microphone (he was wearing a headset) what he would have to say when watching a tape of MMA. That tape he send to the Pride people, they believed he could do it and they took him in.

Millen began to piss off Rutten and Quadros when he’d cut out segments and fights to show a ring girls and entire entrances. Millen didn’t want PRIDE to have any unique segments rather he wanted them to be more like boxing.

He cut out the funny skits that we use to do at the opening of the show, he wanted to make it more look like boxing. I told him that EVERY organization in the world already did that and that people enjoyed the stuff we did before because we did something fresh and new, they NEVER complained before about the editing, they did now. But no, he wanted to make it look like all other organizations.

So that was out and he started to cut the shows together. The complains were like that he cut out fights in order to show some ring girl. Or he showed the entire walk through to the ring but than cut the fights? This didn’t make sense, we are watching fights, but he cuts the fights?

Gary “Jerry” Millen was given too much power by the PRIDE brass and that was when he began to throw his worthless weight around.

They acknowledged that they gave Jerry, and these are there words: “Too much power”, I also told them how he REALLY got his job in Pride and what he did more for lies, but … they believed in second chances and they wanted to give him another shot?! After all the things I told them, they still wanted to give him a second chance?!

Millen was worthless behind the scenes and PRIDE’s business sense in general ruined the relationships with Rutten, Quadros and Ranallo.

First to leave was Quadros…

He went out with me and Stephen Quadros the first night, we went to see some Pancrase fights. I realized that he didn’t like Stephen at all, don’t know why. He would ask me what I wanted to drink, and while Stephen was standing next to me, he wouldn’t ask him anything and gave me only a drink. I asked Stephen afterwards if he did something to piss him off, Stephen had no clue. But I knew that there was something going on.

Next thing I hear is that they fired Stephen a show later.

Now I guess that Jerry now needed a new victim that he could push around, and Mauro Ranallo was that victim, why? Again, I have no clue, but he started to mess with him. I believe because he saw that Mauro was unbelievably talented and maybe he was jealous?

Followed by Rutten…

Anyway, this stress and the fact that Pride never gave me a raise after even 6 years of working for them started to bother me. They tell everybody that I am “the face of Pride”, but they do anything to make it easier on me.

Please understand this, I flew at least 11 times a year to Japan, that’s 77 days gone from home, coming home with a jet lag and than still have to leave the house to do seminars and other stuff because they didn’t pay me enough to live form that. So it became really hard on the family for me and together with the stress from Jerry Millen I though, “I don’t need and deserve this, I am out.” Everybody remembers the “I quit” letter on my website? And after that the President came to talk to me and I told the people that I was back again, remember that? Than they started to do other stuff and that’s where I announced that I this time REALLY quit. And now Millen says that HE did that?

Finally the last victim of the broadcast booth, Mauro Ranallo.

Than when Jerry came to tell Mauro that there was something going down and that he probably was going to be the US representative of Pride, (so this time he took the job from the Japanese people, remember, these were the people that gave him a second chance!!) and he took their place, I guess he did a lot of talking to Mr. Sakikabara and Mr. Sakikabara believed him! They got fired and he got the job. Mauro called me from Japan! And he told me that if THAT was going to happen, he would quit, he would NEVER work under Gary Millen he said. They announced it, and Mauro quit.

Millen displayed his wealth of knowledge while sitting ringside when he’d ask Bas what a kimura was…

He also started to “second guess” Mauro, if Mauro would say “Wow, nice kimura attempted there!!”, he would use his microphone and ask me, (Mauro and I BOTH could hear this, NOT the people at home), “Is that a kimura Bas?”

Not sure it's much of a story, but something that had me watching intently way back when

He did well considering what an animal he was fighting. I think the key go fighting Kerr is fearlessness

When veteran commentator Mauro Ranallo put on a headset and called the action at Rizin FF 5, it wasn’t because he longed to return to Japanese MMA.

In fact, Ranallo’s exit in 2006 from the now-defunct PRIDE FC was followed by an expose of behind-the-scenes mistreatment penned by his broadcast partner, Bas Rutten.

Ranallo largely kept quiet about the man who soured his time overseas, an impressive task for a man who can shred microphones with one scream. But over the years, he made it clear who he held responsible for his departure: Jerry Millen, a former PRIDE executive who resurfaced as a senior vice president for the new Japanese MMA promotion Rizin FF.

When former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko announced his return to Japan for Rizin FF, Ranallo posted, “Too bad the worst person I have ever encountered in MMA is in the cage ! #YouKnowWhoIMean (via Twitter):

Rizin is awesome. All that is missing is @BasRuttenMMA and @mauroranallo on the call. I always hear their voices around NYE. #Pride

Ranallo wouldn’t even mention Millen by name when, during an interview with MMAjunkie Radio, he discussed his decision to call Rizin FF 5 alongside his manager and former broadcast partner, Frank Shamrock. But he didn’t have to fill in much for listeners. As much as the job was about doing the work he loves, he said, it was also about getting back at one of his lifelong enemies.

“The only way I would have gone back to Japan and worked for Rizin would be if a certain individual, and anyone who knows me and my career knows who he is – I will never, ever utter his name again, the worst human being I’ve ever come across in my life, let alone combat sports – someone who tried to ruin my career once before,” he said. “When I found out they were actually targeting me specifically because of this individual and their own problems with him, I said, you know what, I won’t do anything for free, but get me on that plane – I’ll be back in Japan calling MMA if it’s because this guy isn’t there and they want to rub it in.”

When asked for a response to Ranallo’s comments, Millen told MMAjunkie, “I’m not going to acknowledge anything he says, because he’s a mentally ill individual, and I don’t want to also be blamed for bullying him.”

After his departure from PRIDE, Ranallo went on to call fights with the now-defunct Strikeforce, Showtime boxing and recently the WWE. He remains a busy guy in the world of commentary. But a return to MMA’s spiritual homeland to serve up a little revenge was a special job.

“For me, mainly, it was going back to right a professional wrong and to flip the biggest bird possible to one of the biggest pieces of (expletive) I’ve ever come across,” he said.

Whether that hatred turns a satisfying one-off into a longterm job remains to be seen. But the longtime MMA, boxing and pro wrestling commentator is optimistic that Rizin FF has a shot at sticking around. As long as Millen doesn’t, it seems, he’ll be open to the idea.
