MMA forgotten stories thread

"Coleman was originally scheduled to face Randy Couture in a title match for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, but Couture was injured during training and was forced to pull out of the fight. Coleman instead faced a relatively unknown (at that time) last minute replacement fighter, up and coming Lion's Den product Pete Williams."

"One of my best friends, my teammate, my training partner, Kevin ‘The Monster' Randleman, he's not with us, but he deserves to be up here right now instead of me," Coleman said through tears. "So get him in here, UFC. Get him in the Hall of Fame, man."

Coleman, whose 1998 bout against Pete Williams was honored at the event, had been campaigning for Randleman to be part of the 2016 Hall of Fame class since Randleman tragically passed away in February at the age of 44.

"His actions and his highlights and his record and what he accomplished speaks for itself," Coleman recently told MMA Fighting. "There is no reason why Kevin shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. None. You see the outreach from the whole world who loves him. It's simple. He should be in the Hall of Fame. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
"We lived together, wrestled together," Coleman said of Randleman to MMA Fighting. "We fought together, and just enjoyed it. Did we fight back and forth? Of course we did. That's what guys do. But we just loved and respected each other, and I miss him. I miss him bad. I hope they get in him into the Hall of Fame here soon. He deserves it."

At IFC 1, Igor Vovchanchyn had to share a protective cup with other fellow athletes.

The mat of their IFC 1 cage had to be spray painted as it was a rip off of the early ufc logo / mat. In fact, Bob Meyrowitz, the head of the UFC, threatened to sue the group. It was spray painted before the event to avoid a law suit.

The IFC Ukraine event could have a whole book written about it

Guy Mezger and Enson Inoue controversy

Following his win over Enson's brother Egan in Pride FC 13, Mezger was ordered by DSE officials to get on a mic and challenge Enson to a fight after the match (if he won). Out of respect, Mezger, after he defeated Egan, explained and apologized to Enson prior to what he was going to do.

Yeah that was some fucked up underhanded tactics by the promotion. Enson was retired at this point

"The fight at PRIDE 13 between Tra Telligman and Igor Vovchanchyn was originally supposed to be Ken Shamrock taking on Igor, but Ken was forced to withdraw from the fight with an injury."
This is stuff that was hard to know at the time. Esp w pride, you'd know the card a week before it happened

Ufc vet Andy Anderson was the referee. UFC vet Ron Van Clief was the ring interviewer. and one of the commentators along with Bas Rutten . Speaking of Andy Anderson, according to Clyde Gentry's book "No Holds Barred", Anderson was involved in an altercation with Ufc vet Paul Herrera at an Ultimate Japan 1 after fight party in which Anderson reportedly knocked Herrera out with one punch.

According to the book "Brawl", following the event, a drunk Bas Rutten threw Paul Varelans through a window accidently after Varelans bit Bas when they were playfully wrestling around. Later on, at a strip club, Bas jumped on stage with the entertainers and was confronted by a security guard holding a machine gun. Bas reached down and bitch slapped the guard in the face. Andy Anderson lifted Bas up on his shoulder and got him out of there immediately. On the way back to the hotel, Bas stood up in the taxi and then pissed on the taxi driver. The taxi driver stopped and yelled at Bas and he did it again.
One thing that will never be forgotten is that bas rutten rules. Him dancing with the girls and slapping the guy is etched in my memory

This thread is great. So many things I've learned. And so many things I remember like yesterday. All the fighters and orgs that I miss, but I'm glad I got to see a lot of it happen.

This is quite possibly the best thread I have read here on Sherdog. I have been following MMA since 1993 and haven't heard a lot of these stories.

Great job guys and a shout out to @HHJ

The fight between Wanderlei Silva and Mark Hunt at Shockwave 2004 was originally supposed to be Wanderlei taking on Kazushi Sakuraba for a fourth time, but when Sakuraba injured himself in training, Mark Hunt stepped up and took the fight on a mere three days notice.
Wanderlei also rightfully asked for alot more money, but he is still a savage fearless brave beautiful beast for taking this fight

Thanks man,it really took off.

According to Dave meltzer, nobuhiko takada's Pride fight with kyle sturgeon was fixed for him to win so he could obtain a win going into his rematch with Rickson Gracie. Takada lost that rematch with Rickson and went on to also pay off Coleman to lose in his next match in order to once again have some credibility as Takada was a big star in Japan and losing support from his Japanese fans. With these two fights being fixed, Takada had no legit wins in mma as he lost or drawed in every other fight. The excuse for the fixed fights early in pride was to save the pride promotion. Fixed fights were typical as most Japanese fighters came from pro wresting which had predetermined outcomes. Sakuraba then came to pride and had success which reduced takada's pressure to be the face of pride in Japan.

there were some movies, long ago, with MMA curious facts.
I recall the background song were Two steps from Hell - protectors of the earth (choir).
I watched those movies so many times, I had to download this music to my workout songs! :)

Frank Shamrock pwned Dan Henderson at the Contender grappling series

Art Davie was fired from the Ufc when Bob Meyrowitz found out that Davie went behind his back to start another mma organization called Thunderdome which never got off the ground. His match making position was taken over by John Perretti. According to an interview by Campbell McClaren on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Art Davie was so pissed that he turned against the Ufc and even sent a letter to John McCain saying that he was right and the Ufc was like human cockfighting.
Piretter wound up doing his own promotion. He was like a Dana white clone, bald white promoter. They had trouble operating due to mma becoming illegal everywhere. They were trying to get fuckin Indian tribal councils to let them run it there

@HHJ this is a truly awesome thread. I've been able to read a couple pages each night as I'm winding down before bed and it really delivers. It's fun to hear a little bit of behind the scenes action from the good old days. Thanks to everyone who has contributed!

In the fight between gary goodridge and pedro octavio, goodridge squeezed octavio's nuts with his toes and then repeatedly did it with his hands because it was legal.
THE Pedro.
