Friends at work were discussing which lift they would do if they had to choose between the two and once you choose you could never do the other.

I was in the minority and said Military Press. My reasoning was because if you do it starting with the bar on the floor then you are working out a whole lot of other muscles as well as improving balance.

They argued that the Bench Press would make you stronger because you could use more weight with less chance of injury.

Which would you choose if you could only do one or the other?

I can see arguments for both. In this magical world I'd flip a coin!

i agree with you gorgo. i have never liked the bench press for whatever reason. i already never do it.

Military from me everytime........ironically,if injured, and I have to stop training,my bench is back to where it was,way faster than anywhere else,i don't hate benching, but in everyday life for me its the least useful of the 'big 4' of deads, squat, overhead pressing and benching.

OHP and it's not even close.

Big shoulders with a small chest still looks boss. Big chest with small shoulders looks weird and lame.

Wouldn't starting it from the floor make it 2 exercises against one?

That being said, I'm on a bit of overhead press kick at the moment. So would choose that

Higher risk of injury with the military press? Dafuq? Even if you lift like a complete dunce with a huge arch in the military press, chances are you'd sooner decapitate yourself with the benchpress if you've got an ego that size. Dumb arguments.

Military press. For some reason if I bench my right wrist hurts, overhead pressing gives no problem.

Bench press. Overhead press doesn't give you swole pecs.

I would choose military press.

If you like bench press, thats cool, do it. But its a bro lift at best.

I'd choose press over bench any day. Unfrtunately powerlifting chose to bench, and as a result, I haven't put a barbell over my head in more than a year.

Jaunty gonna Jaunt

Remember Tra Telligman, and how bad he looked? Well, he still had one pec. If you only did OHP amd didn't bench, you'd have zero pecs. You would look even worse.

OHP all day er'ry day. I don't dislike bench, I just feel that ohp is a different kind of monster. It's more convenient, safe and genuine.

DC and Marvel Comics rate their Heroes and Villains strength by how much they can Military Press.

Overhead press.

Not even a question for me.

As does the AD&D strength stat lol

I would probably chose the incline to get the compromise of both..

If I really had to chose between those two though, I think OHP ofc, is better, but paradoxally my OHP was never stronger than when I was doing lots of heavy paused bench press so..

High Incline Bench is a decent substitute if for some reason one cannot do SOHP. But if at all possible, Overhead Pressing is far superior.
