I think he actually still had most of his physical tools he had at his peak when he lost to Douglas but definitely lost focus. Supposedly he was on anti depressants and shit too.

I misread the thread title as 91 instead of 96 for some reason.

I think you can see a loss of speed and explosiveness when you watch his fight with Stewart, for example, compared to how he was vs Spinks or Holmes.

no, he doesn't, nor do most people who follow boxing. he had all the tools to be one of the greatest but too short a prime against lesser competition than the true greats..

Agree that Tyson is not top 3. He just doesn't have as deep a resume as many other ATG heavies.

I think he's top 10ish. Not top 3.

People close to him said he was doing a molotov of drugs and booze, had legal problems with don king, pending divorce issues with robin givens.....on top of it all, he had a camp full of yes men and know nothings feeding him bs at every turn. His corner men were not even prepared to handle cuts during the douglas fight...shit was just a mess everywhere.

The fact that he didnt kill someone and actually made it as far in the fight as he did is beyond me. That guy must have been a mental train wreck, let alone physically in no condition to be fighting for a HW title.

Cus died before he even won the title....it was Rooney leaving his camp and the leaches descending in that really fcked him over.

Many experts and fellow boxers believe that if mike tyson lived the clean life and trained like he used to in the mid 80's with the same camp, he would have reigned for a lot longer then he did. Even Lewis said he was legit scared of him when they first met in the 80's. Dude hit like a mack truck, had lightning speed, could get in the inside with ease, and had an extensive knowledge of the game. Just a scary specimen. Damn shame the fast life caught up to him.

As the saying goes his talent took him where his character couldn't keep him , Shame really but he seemed very unstable mentally

It was a slew of things, we saw his marriage to Robin Givens deteriorate on national TV.

He hooked up with Don King, he told Tyson to fire everyone w/ a D'Amato legacy, so he

Fired Kevin Rooney.

All this after he beat Spinks and then meeting Buster Douglas sent him in a turmoil for years to come, along with his noticable change in fighting style, Peek a boo? where did you go?

Tyson had psychological problems. Robin Givens, her mother as well as Don King pretty much took over his live. Also, Tyson always had problems before fights. He was tough to control and very emotional, sometimes even crying out of fear to fail.

What could have been a factor training wise is, Tyson trained mostly without any weight lifting up until the late 80s. When he fired Rooney, he allegedly started using weights a lot to build up his muscle mass quicker, which made him a slower.

Than the rape convictions, prison, drugs...

Dude seems to be doing good nowadays.

Buy his autobiography, it explains everything and is a fucking good read

86 Tyson was a boxer, who was physically gifted. The head movement, the hand speed, combination punching, etc. 96 Tyson was nothing more than a head hunter, with no faints, no set ups, single punches, etc.

Yea if you're even slightly interested in Tyson
Amazon: Mike Tyson

he does an HBO version on it
http://www.hbo.com/movies/mike-tyson-undisputed-truth

low quality youtube version, for obvious reasons

Also imo, when ppl say Prime Tyson, my version of his Prime is right when he beat Spinks at 35-0 in '88, he still had Kevin Rooney.

That means he did 62% of his fights w/ Cus guidance (total fights 56)

This is the Tyson i want to know, and now after 20 years of wasting away money and a lot of bad decisions, like someone said, he seems to be doing good again.

he's got a 2nd season of his cartoon network show.
he's in Ip Man 3
he seems relatively free of tramatic brain injury

I mean did you see the clip w/ Tyson showing Ali, he can still do Ali's shuffle, it's heartbreaking to watch Ali.

I was in middle school when I first saw Tyson knock out Frazier on national TV. After that I pasted my bedroom walls with pictures of him and swore one day to become a professional boxer. Needless to say, I never made it to the big show. LOL In fact, I never made it past the boxing gym. I'm still a big boxing fan. However, the Tyson Saga is just too much for me to bear. I would rather not get into it. It's sad. :(

What he said. Tyson in his prime was a complete fighter with immense pressure, speed, power, and defense. By 1996, he was a dangerous heavyweight with speed and power but had lost most of his fundamental technique.

Prime Tyson and prime RJJ are the two closest guys in history to being perfect fighters, IMO. Anyone who hasn't needs to watch the training footage of Tyson & Rooney drilling in the ring in his camp for Tyrell Biggs. Might have been 1988 but Tyson was still a killer
