Mike Perry's decline

This thread is about head movement, first off. Secondly, it's not like Mike has shown he can rely on his footwork either. That's a separate skill all together.

Changing it up isn't exactly obvious either. You're talking about proactive head movement. That's a trained motion, not a reactive one (to your point). If you're not training it regularly (Perry clearly isn't), it's not going to just happen.

I think it has less to do with training and more falling in love with your power. I've done it myself, although luckily I pulled through and I had coaches who tore me a new asshole for it. Mike Perry has become lazy for sure, but its because he knows he can end a fight in 1 punch, and assumes he'll meet the same kind of success.

He’s just kind of an idiot to be honest
He is a natural fighter though and there is a big difference between recent performance and past performance. To me the focus on his relationships is what caused the decline. I've seen that type before and was that type in the past. He's the type to put his relationship over everything else.

I bet your power is off the charts

People that missed the McGregor train wanted to jump on the Perry bandwagon for internet props.

So your coaches are the ones who tore you a new asshole for relying on your power?

Kind of the point I'm making. Perry's training situation is shit. Let's assume that loving his power is the reason his head movement is garbage. Without a trainer to call it out, he's not going to change that habit.

All of this is assumptions. It could be because he isn't training head movement, it could be because his style has become more limited, it could be as simple as his naturally low fight IQ is no longer aided by having a trainer in the corner. I think it comes back to the part that Perry's training like garbage.

He only stayed around the UFC so long because he was a douche and MMA fans love douches.

I think being an alcoholic caused his decline, have you heard that 911 call, and seen the bar fight? The dude has a problem, who knows what he has done that isn’t public. And it’s not normal to look as bad as he does at his age, it’s not nearly as bad, but it reminds me of how Chuck Liddell looks now, best way to describe it is they look like they are moving underwater. He shouldn’t look like that at his age unless he’s abusing his body somehow.

It's one of those things where I don't know what he's doing, so I won't assume its lack of preparation. Since he's a headcase I'm going to assume its that, more than the training.

Even if he is training like garbage he shouldn’t look that bad, I even heard him talk about how he just feels like he lost it, he used to be able to hit people and hurt them way more. He is physically much worse than he used to be. Shit training doesn’t help.

Dig the AV, btw. I play guitar too. Whether it's sarcasm or not, I'll always appreciate those AVs.

But up your tone game and get an MT-2 on there ;).

I think he's always been an alcoholic, but probably got worse during his relationships. Seems like when they are fighting it always turns out bad. Saw the thing where he smashed a mirror or glass and was all cut up. That's why to me the decline deals more with the relationship aspect because it seems like the relationship greatly affects him when things are going bad, and seems to be the main focus when things are going good.

Yeah. Perry's too hard of a guy to pinpoint his decline. He does a lot of dumb shit.

I'm mostly trying to theorize on why his head movement went to shit. Ponz is a capable fighter and Perry looked better than I thought he would that night.

Yeah it’s all speculation, but IMO it’s most likely partying and alcohol if not harder drugs. He is 29, but looks 39 in there, just abnormally slow and stiff.

Without being rude for the sake of being rude, Mike Perry strikes me as completely clueless. By that I mean he has absolutely no clue what's good for his career; not the first idea.

He seems to make critical career choices based on how he's feeling at the time; blaming coaching (lol) for hurting his game, but being completely unable to focus on his career outside of the cage - yeah, buddy, being coached clearly isn't and never was the problem. YOU'RE the problem, Mike, you're pretty much the main (if not sole) problem you've got.

His idea of doing better with his girlfriend in his corner instead of someone who could give him actual advice is equivalent to Diego Sanchez going through the whole Josh Fabia shit. It makes no sense. There's zero chance that's ever going to work for anyone, ever.

If Mike Perry had ignored the hell out of himself, he might be a decent fighter - but what's done is done, and what's done is a ton of self-inflicted damage.

thats what happens when the only person in ur corner is ur 18 year old gf. not surprised in the slightest. if it didnt matter to train at a great gym and gave a solid corner then top level fighters wouldnt bother pay a large % of their money to them.

Yeah but he needs money to support himself and his family for the next 40 years… it’s gonna suck to have to get a shitty 9-5. I’m guessing he doesn’t have many skills to get a job outside of fighting

What’s wrong with a 9-5? He can always use his notoriety as a ufc fighter to sell cars or real estate. Both are easy gigs for former athletes.

That's what not seriously training does to you.
